Well, I've been sitting at home today annoyed with myself for not managing to get to AltFiction, as I'd hoped. Ruddy health problems ... grrrr.

And then, out of the blue, I get an email accepting a story of mine for an anthology due later this year ... and this will be my first ever acceptance in a paying publication! I'd better not say any more yet as I don't know if it's OK for me to say what the antho is until I get the go-ahead from the editor.

The only drawback is it's ebook only - no paper copies - so I might even have to go out and buy myself a Kindle! (and you all know my views on ebooks here ).

Anyway, that's cheered me up no end. Hope those of you who went to AltFiction are enjoying yourselves. Tell us all about it when you get back.

You received 20 pounds for the story and have to spend 120 to be able to read it? Nice work. Just joking, Caroline. Congratulations!

Oh no! You're poorly as well, Ramsey? Hope you're better soon.

Thanks for the congrats on the story acceptance, everyone.

Hubert - "You received 20 pounds for the story and have to spend 120 to be able to read it?"
My husband's response was very similar to that too!

In fact, it looks like there might be a possibility that it will be released as a paperback too - I hope so. Once I can tell you what the book is, you realise I'll be plugging it left, right and centre - to make it worth the publisher's while to do a paperback version too.

Oh, and I'm sure there are lots of authors in there whose stories will be much more while your while to read than mine!

Ah, have they? The TOC isn't on their website yet though - and I don't "do" Facebook. I'll wait till it's on the website, or till I get an answer from him to my query about it. I want to see the TOC too - to see who I'm in there with!

Oh and thanks, Chris.

Terry - I forgot to say, you'll probably recognise the story when you see it. You were right, of course, it wasn't right for MBFG. But fortunately it was for this one.

Thanks again, everyone!

Just to put this in context, 'cos I feel a bit daft now as this is only a little piece of flash fiction and you're all congratulating me like I've just had my first novel published or something (you are a nice bunch, honestly). When I was a kid, I had a dream that one day I'd be a rich and famous horror writer. Well, I grew out of that dream some time ago, of course! But, although I've had a few pieces published online over the last few years (and I felt really good about those too), this feels *really* good - knowing that someone thinks the story worth paying me for! So that's the context I'm talking about - that feeling like I've finally managed to achieve a (severely) watered-down version of my childhood dream. Sounds daft, I know.

Stevie - if you're doing a little fun competition again like the World Cup one, I'll be up for it!

Hey, what about me, Stevie? I seem to recall I came second! Looking forward to Euro 2012. The rugby world cup last year would have been fun to bet on, but I think I may be the only rugby follower here ('tis my duty as a Welshman).

'Tis true, you did. Mind you, you and I were pretty much neck and neck behind Stevie most of the time, if I recall correctly.

Rugby? Bah! Lots of muddy muscular men jumping on top of each other. Who would want to watch that kind of thing?

This time I've decided to do away with the bonus points that tend to skew the end result, even if I would have ended up winning anyway (), and go for a simple 1 point for a correct result and 3 points for a correct score - from start to finish. What ya think, folks?

As opposed to watching them dribble over the ball, enter the box, shoot and score? I have no idea.

Go on Gary - have a go at him for telling jokes with slightly smutty punchlines. Google it and tell everyone that it wasn't one of his jokes originally so you can try to make him look small. You know you like doing that.

As moderator, Weber, I make comments when I feel the need to. I was asked to be the moderator and try to fulfil the requirements. You clearly have a problem with that. Well, so it goes.

I'm looking at Stevie's joke and - maybe just a personal point of view - do not find it as embarrassingly vulgar as the ones you have used. Certainly yours could not be described as "slightly smutty".

Still, if anyone disagrees, tell me and I'll delete this one.

Oh, and before you get too critical, just remember that what you said to me after that previous episode: I believe the words "go fuck yourself" were used. Water off a duck's back, of course, but if you want to dwell on it . . .

My one big remaining ambition (now that my reviews are appearing in Interzone ) is to have a piece of fiction published somewhere *other* than my own magazine.

Yeah, I'm really chuffed. I'm nowhere near as good as I'd like to be yet, but the pressure of writing for Interzone (and occasionally Black Static) is encouraging me to work hard at getting better, much like reviewing for the BFS did. The main thing is finding a way to be more consistent, to be sure of being able to write a decent review about that one particular book - whereas with TQF I can write twenty reviews and trust that at least one or two will turn out well.

Would love to see submissions to TQF from you!

Have you had any news on your Doctor Who project?

>>Have you had any news on your Doctor Who project?<<

Ah, no. Well, not good news anyway. It's a long story, but the original publisher who had actually said "yes", provided I could get sufficient Who-related people interested in contributing, then decided to "change his business model" and asked me to pay for him to publish the book. That wasn't an option I wanted to follow - especially with it being a charity book which I wasn't going to receive any payment from anyway.

So, I tried another couple of publishers - no response from one, and a polite "no" from another. The one who responded tells me that, apparently, a similar book is currently being done by someone anyway. I've yet to find out who that is though (I'm very much hoping it isn't the original publisher I approached who has stolen my idea). So, it looks like I'm probably too late.

There is one other publisher who I thought I might try, but I'd like to know what that other similar book is first and who is publishing it, in case I need to change the focus of mine.

So, if anyone knows any publishers who'd like to do a factual Doctor Who book for charity, you know where I am!
(or if anyone can tell me what the book that's in progress from someone else might be, I'd be most grateful)

Under the "you win some" heading of this thread title, I have another piece of good news for yours truly. I'm going to be doing some interviews for those lovely people over at the This Is Horror site (if you haven't checked them out yet, I'd really suggest you do so - it's an excellent site for reviews, interviews, news, etc). At the moment, it's only the quick-and-easy "Meet the Publisher" interviews I'm doing due to time constraints, but hopefully later I might be able to make even more of a contribution to the site. Chuffed to bits!
