I'm afraid I'm blowing my trumpet again, but, once again I'm extrememly excited to announce another book...my first text book, co-authored with three other very personable and excellent writers. Okay, its probably not a book many of you will feel the need to rush out and buy but I'm as chuffed as nuts about it.

Congratulations, Terry!

Is that a close-up of a Lovecraftian tentacle?

My husband (an electrical engineer) would probably enjoy that one!

I see it's a "work-based learning" book. Is it a standard text book, or are there WBL exercises, etc. for the students to work through? I love WBL stuff (though it would have to be management and organisational behaviour for me to want to buy a copy).

Congrats, Terry! I remember my old PhD supervisor saying how chuffed he felt when he got his first textbook on the shelf.

A beach read for your husband Caroline! I won't give away the ending. There are some practical and knowledge-check exercises in the book plus, immimently, a speparate disc packed full of activities and other goodies for the students (and the worst part to write!).

I wrote the three elelctrical chapters in this one and four chapters (including on on welding) in the forthcoming Level 1 version.

And thanks for the congratualtions, Steve and Caroline and yes, it is a close-up of a Lovecrafty tentacle. Devil of a job getting close enough to take the shot without getting your soul sucked out and your brain eaten. The publisher lost four photographers before they could get the snap. And all they had to do was be polite to Cthuluhygornmshyebdiangksl and ask him to say cheese.

"...plus, immimently, a speparate disc packed full of activities and other goodies for the students (and the worst part to write!)."

I'm surprised you say that was the worst part to write. One thing I love about this teaching lark is writing case studies, exercises and other activities to facilitate learning (note to non-teachers: we don't *teach* students any more, we "facilitate their learning" ). I found that - particularly writing case studies - was the closest I got to fiction writing in my professional/work life. I miss that, now that I'm only doing bits of online tuition on someone else's modules and not having to write my own stuff.

And I've just realised I've given away the fact - on a horror-related forum of all places - that I get excited by the thought of work-based learning. Oh, the shame!

The case studies were fun, especially about the exploding power cable at a Who concert (not fun for the poor fella who was injured in the accident and who related the tale to me - he was a Who roadie in a previous life) and the fierce-some explosive short circuit in my friends curtain factory, but the endless Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans and activity sheets did lose their appeal after a while.

What I love is taking technical information and turning it into something people can understand.

Cheers
Terry
