Either that or global warming is pushing the wendigo southwards.

"Miami police shoot, kill naked man who was 'eating' face of another man" - http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/crime/miami-police-shoot-kill-naked-man-who-wa s-2377343.html

I hope they got him before the victim was hurt too badly.

Yikes!

Just saw some pictures of the victim from the face eating incident. He was hurt badly, unfortunately. One eye and most of his face is gone.

The real apocalypse that is upon us is a moral one. I'm appalled by the almost universally jocular tone with which this story is being commented on around the web.

Sorry, I don't think that kind of joking is necessary. Shouldn't Ann Winterton have been suspended because of her Morecambe Bay joke, then? Possibly not, but weren't people right to be offended by it?

I'm with Proto & Ramsey on this issue. I've always found people who insist on joking about horrific news stories and tragedies while the corpses are still warm, as it were, to be almost as distasteful as those cretins who seek out real life imagery of gore and horror online for tittilation and pass the photos round their mates.

It's a reaction to horror and tragedy one is constantly bombarded with in the workplace and to raise one's voice in protest is to be labelled some kind of humourless killjoy. I've learned to grimace and try my best to ignore them. Some things in life simply shouldn't be joked about or thought of as "cool", imho.

Humour as a coping mechanism is probably as old as humanity itself. Sensitivity is a different issue altogether. The joke the mp got sacked for had been doing the rounds for at least a week. I think i'd heard it from at least 5 people. She should never have told it publically - being in as prominent a position as she was, she should never have gone near it in public. What did she think the reaction would be? Stupidity on that level is as good a reason to pack her as any. Personally i don't think there's any topic that you can't joke about. Just be wary of the sensitivities of people around you. Saying that, when my mother was told that her heart was a third of the size it should be, soon after an amig attack, my first response was 'i always said you were heartless.' which got one of the loudest laughs i think that cardiac ward had ever heard. She didn't stop giggling for at least a couple of minutes.

God knows there's nothing funny about this brand new story - that porn stars are turning into zombie-killers:

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/05/30/luka-rocco-magnotta-video-allegedly-show s-body-parts-suspect-dismembering-victim/

"The nearly 11-minute video purports to show Mr. Magnotta attacking a naked man, who is tied to a bed frame, with both an ice pick and a kitchen knife, according to the description. The victim is stabbed, has his throat slashed and is later decapitated and dismembered... The video, filmed in a dimly lit room, also shows the killer playing with his victim’s limbs and using one of them to masturbate. The attacker later performs a sex act on the dismembered, decapitated corpse. He also uses a knife and fork to slice a piece of fatty flesh from the victim’s rear, and then brings in a dog to eat the purported corpse."

What are the bets people get more upset with the mention of "kitten-killing videos" in that story than the other stuff? Also:

And in regards to the moral apocalypse comment, people may watch gore videos online and joke about atrocities but not so very long ago public executions were considered entertainment for the whole family. There's been no decline in morality, this is just business as usual for a large chunk of the human race (not that I'm defending it).

A lot of humour is in the phrasing.

Best example off the top of my head is an old Bob Monkhouse joke

"When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep, like my Grandad did. Not screaming and panicking like the passengers on his bus."

Told right, that gets a laugh every time. But look at the story inferred in that and it's plainly horrific.

Yes, but it *is* a story - not a true fact (although, of course, there are terrible cases where someone falls asleep or dies at the wheel and kills people as a result). The whole point some people made here was about whether it was right to joke about horrible things which are *true*.

Personally, I like my horror to be pure fiction. There's enough true horror in this world already. I don't want to read (or joke) about even more of it.

There was some black humour in evidence here in Canada when the story about the foot being mailed to Conservative Party HQ surfaced: 'Was it a right foot?' (a reference to the Conservatives being right wing); 'It's a down payment on the arm and a leg the new F35 fighter jets the [Conservative] government has committed to buying are going to cost us,' etc. Because the story was so outré that that seemed one appropriate way of dealing with it. However, the joking has stopped now that the full extent of the case has been revealed.

Addendum to my above post: the killer took the nom-de-plume of "John Kilbride," which I thought was purely fabricated, but to my ignorance was in fact a serial killer in Britain involved in the "Moors Murders" of the 1960's.... Our current killer looks a lot like one pic I saw of this John Kilbride, too.

I've just very recently come to realise people are not laughing at the situations, but any humour inherent in them. I think it is like being tickled - it's agony while it goes on but still we laugh. I don't know if it's coping ut rather distance - we don't know these people, never will, and I don't think we're made to hear about such faraway folk. I think we do feel sad amid the laughs, I really do. Also - it's a well known fact the body and mind protects itself. I think our subconscious doesn't want us to worry so it *makes* us laugh. It's self administered medicine.
As an aside, this popped into my mind - again that pesky tickling - that the man who had his face eaten could receive his attackers by way of transplant?

The serial killer who filmed that killing; apparently he really made a big fuss about wanting help early on but it was ignored. I've heard this a few times lately, killers asking for help but being brushed aside. I think a kind of avalanch happens - the killer mentioned above says once you begin getting into cruelty there's no turning back, nothing can match the experience - that any morality these people have is frail and must be harked at while they are still more rational.

That said, I don't like it either when people laugh uproariously in unison at a thing, make a meal of it.

I remember a lot of people saying they inexplicably laughed when John Lennon was shot. I did too, for a second. Really odd.

Actually Craig - the moors murderers were Liam Brady and Myra Hindley. Kilbride was a 12 year old boy that they murdered.
