Next weekend I will be doing a bungee jump. My one great fear in life is heights. I detest them. I used to live on the 19th floor of a tower block, but that was fine. The windows were at waist height, there was no balcony to fall off. I was OK there.

When I'm near any kind of unguarded drop my knees turn to jelly. A bungee jump is second only to jumping out of a plane for the thing I would least like to do.

I will be going through hell and complete and utter mortal terror as that platform rises to 200 feet. After which I will be jumping with nothing more than a piece of elastic round my ankles. Please make the paralysis inducing fear I'll need to overcome to take that step off the edge worth my effort!!!!

I seem to recall mentioning feeling the same way about heights to Lord P., saying I presumed I had vertigo. I love heights if I feel safe, but really start to panic if there's no (or only a low) rail. "That's not vertigo", he said - "that's common sense"!

Good luck with this Marc - I'm most impressed! Are you doing it for charity or 'just because'?

Wow, Weber, you're a very brave man indeed! I'm terrified of heights too, and no way would you ever get me to jump off a tall platform with only an elastic band tied round my ankles! I think I'd prefer to dive into a pit of snakes (and I'm terrified of those too).

I'm off to sponsor you for a little something - you deserve it! (and so does Help For Heroes) Very best of luck to you!

I like to watch those bravehearts whenever I can. From time to time it does happen that they have to lower the platform again because the volunteer is unwilling to take the plunge . . . I presume once you're up there things look somewhat different.

Good luck, Weber!

Sorry if that sounded a bit short and snappy. I'm at work and have to write messages on here in short bursts while no one's looking or on my phone whilst taking whatever kind of break from my pc. Thank you to the people who've contributed so far. You've been very generous.

Here's hoping your jump, Weber, makes a big impact.

(that was just a joke, of course)

No pressure mate - honest. If you're strapped for cash, then your best wishes that the rope stays round my ankle will be plenty.

It sounds bloody terrifying, I must say. I saw a clip on youtube once - Jesus.
But it's much safer here than in Mexico, I have no doubt.

I've given you some money in the hope that you'll vomit at the top and that the puke will hit you in the face on the way back up.

When i was in the air cadets at school we went for a trip to the local airbase so we could go up in a small plane. We always sat in the front of the plane with the pilot at the main controls directly behind us. One of my friends managed to throw up while the plane was near the top of a loop. The vomit landed on the roof of the plane and as the plane completed the loop it slid back and landed it the pilots face.

I hope you survi... I mean, enjoy, your jump, Weber! I went to a group bungee jump with some friends around twenty years ago, and I was extremely envious of them (I had just injured my back, so couldn't jump). it looked like a pretty amazing experience, judging by everyone's expressions on the way back up. Good luck!

So, how did it go, Weber? I see on another thread that you survived. Are you going to do it again some time?

Seriously, here's hoping you raised lots of cash for a good cause.

It was possibly more of a bungee push than a jump. But i do still exist. I'm not ashamed to admit that I screamed. In fact I had time to stop screaming, take a breath and scream a second time. And a third time as I fell after the first bounce. However I managed to not vomit or poo myself. Of that small fact I try to claim back some small measure of dignity.

Very glad to hear it! You should be most proud of yourself.

In addition to fighting my fear of heights, I have also just beaten my addiction to the hokey-cokey. It's taken some time - I've been to that clinic so many times, in and out in, out, but I've turned myself around and that's what it's all about
