That's a good essay. It reminds me of how all the arts—painting, sculpture, film, etc.—are about painstaking work on the artist's part, maddening at times and effortful and endless and despairing and so on; all so that the eventual beneficiary, the enjoyer of that work of art, can consume it pain-free and in an instant. A painting that took a year to complete is glanced at, and in mere seconds fully consumed... then the glance turns away, and is on to the next thing. But that glance and smile of delight is the artist's greatest joy, and worth all the effort. That and the $$$. | ||

Thanks for sharing this, Ramsey. I've long been an admirer of his stories, not just the more well-known 'Silver John' tales, but also the Thunstone and Pursuivant stories that appear in Lonely Vigils, as well as all the ones he wrote that do not feature any of those particular characters. I must start his novels one day... |
