We haven't started a DW thread yet! I must admit I was reluctant to watch it as I've not been impressed recently. Anyway, I watched it yesterday .. and loved every minute of it. What a turn-around from previous stories!

Right from the new title sequence (retro-style, with electronic bits - wooo-hooo!!) I was hooked. Great story (OK maybe plotholes, but this is DW so who cares?), and Clara is going to be an excellent companion, methinks. Fabulous twist-in-the-tale (I won't say more in case anyone hasn't watched it yet). Finally, they've given Matt Smith a story where he can *really* show off his ability as the Doctor.

So, what did the rest of you think of it?

I'm told it is a prequel to some Patrick Troughton episodes in 1968. And the London underground map is relevant, too...

Yes, I was watching for that link. The only thing that springs mind is one of my favourite stories from my childhood (now lost - the story, that is, not my childhood). It was the one with yetis on the London Underground. Might we be seeing the yetis back again next series, I wonder?

I found it more considered than previous Smith episodes. One of the best of his run - not because it was a great story but because of the treatment.

I loved when the girl climbed the stairs to the Tardis.

Here's my take on the big companion mystery...

The Doctor has spent the last two series writing himself out of history and going under the radar again. Now someone's trying to draw him out and they're doing it by seeding multiple versions of an irresistible companion for him throughout history. Who knows the Doctor well enough to come up with a plan like that?

The Master.

Could be, David. I was actually wondering: is she a Time Lady?

I'm just hoping she's not Kenny from Southpark in disguise...

She hasn't regenerated when she's died though, so I think she must be something else.

Finally got to see the Christmas 'Doctor Who' and thought it was brilliant pulp sci-fi entertainment with humour, scares and thrills balanced just right and a successfully Christmasy vibe without the usual sentimental mush. The icing on the cake was how it all tied in with the overall plot arc... intriguing developments or what!

It has me excited about the new series after believing the show was heading into decline. Fingers crossed. I'd give it 9/10 and thought it was by far the best Christmas special yet - in fact the only one I've really enjoyed to be honest - so well done the Moff!

Well, I finally caught this one, and I thought it was the best episode in years, and the best Christmas special ever done.

I've found Who growing increasingly incontinent: visually, aurally and in terms of plot. This story was simple, elegant and intelligible. The cinematorgraphy was measured and controlled. The production design is less frenetic and communicates one simple idea at a time rather than failing to communicate a dozen half-baked and conflicting ideas (the best example being the Tardis re-design, which I love). The music was appropriate and less rhetorical than it was been of late.

The only black spot was more all-capable smug characters (the lesbian couple), made all the worse becasue they were irrelevent to the plot. Such characters can't be brave, because they're never scared.

Otherwise, I loved it.

Maybe the Mayans were right but missed by a couple of weeks. This has to be a sign...
