Mark Steel does wind me up though. He makes Joel look right-wing! |

Mick, I'm not sure the left-right linear spectrum works as a way of comparing related perspectives. Is a Stalinist more or less 'left-wing' than a Trotsykist? Each would claim to be more left-wing than the other. Also, people are inclined to claim a specific political stance in a rather introspective way, as if what they actually did about it was a secondary question. It's not a secondary question. What your political activities are and who you work with politcially are far more important than where you place yourself on an imaginary scale of political theory. Perhaps the way we talk about political convictions has been tainted by the way people used to, and sometimes still do, talk about religious ones: as if the fine details of our beliefs were vitally important because God is listening. But they are not vitally important, perhaps not even to ourselves. What matters is how we engage politically and what consequences that has. Mark Steel may not actually be any more radical than me, but he's far more active and significant – that's the important difference. |
