There was a mad case of flu going round here the last few months. I was knocked on my back for nearly 2 weeks by it and almost everyone I know had an equally debilitating bout. It seemed to be far more virulent and severe in its symptoms than any of the recent flu scares. Yet there wasn't a word about it in the media. Weird, I thought...

To tell the truth, Stevie, that's what flu is – you presumably had one of the seasonal flu viruses – but the real thing rather than the heavy cold most people call 'flu'. I've had flu twice in my life – very, very unwell both times. You see some vocalist on stage saying "Sorry my voice is a bit off, I've got flu" and you think "No, sweetheart, you've got a cold, if you had flu you would be unable to stand up."

Swine flu, for example, is less severe than some well-established seasonal flu viruses. It can kill you, but so can they. The swine flu panic was media-driven: far more people died of the usual flu viruses that winter than died of swine flu.

Quite agree. My boss has an irritating habit of saying "I've got a touch of the 'flu" whenever he's got the sniffles.
Nope, you've got hay fever or a cold. I've had 'flu a couple of times and you do feel really ill. With a cold you don't.

Ah, but what you fellas forget is that man-flu is much, much worse than the variety which us ladies get.
(only joking)

And talking of flu I'm ever grateful to RCMBer Mark Lynch (is he still around here nowadays?) who suggested propolis to me. I used to suffer from almost permanent infections of one kind or another (goes with the chronic illness), but since Mark mentioned propolis and I've been taking it I've hardly had a sniffle. And when I do get something I recover so much quicker. I even survived a bout of shingles! Brilliant stuff. Those bees are clever little fellas.

The main thing I remember about the last time I had the flu, many years ago, was that my skin hurt. All over. Couldn't get out of bed, but the sheets pressing against me were actually painful.

Caroline, I'm actually in that position myself right now thanks to rheumatoid arthritis. Had my current infection for going on six months and I'm on an 8 week course of antibiotics to try and finally root it out. I might give propolis a try, what kind of dose would you recommend?

Ouch! I feel for you, David. Me? Fibromyalgia, polymyalgia rheumatica and osteoarthritis (as well as ME) - no fun.

I take propolis capsules which I get online from Frank Roberts Herbal. They've been around for many years (based in Bristol) so they're a good company - no dodgy stuff. I take one twice daily, but I think you can take up to three or four? Might be worth giving it a try?

Sorry, I've turned this into a health thread ... well, I guess it *was* a health thread to start with!

I had flu in the early 90s. I literally was too ill to get out of bed for several days. I have never experienced anything like it before or since.

Thanks Caroline! I'll check out Frank Roberts and head down to the local health shop tomorrow and see what their prices are like. Anything's worth a shot. I respond pretty well to the medication I'm on as they caught it early with me, but the downside is it weakens my immune system and I'm getting really sick of being sick. I think stress has had a lot to do with my problems in the last few years too so I'm working on that and hoping it will make a difference too.

When the big Flu strikes, Des, we'll all know about it quicker than you might think. We're overdue... and there was me thinking of re-reading 'The Stand' and rewatching 'Survivors'!

Wow, ten years ago. Des must be having a wing ding now.
It also makes me realise I might never have had flu.
And hi, Joel. :-(
