Yikes. I see what you mean.

Recently, at a conference related to my job, a bloke I'd been chatting with shook my hand in an odd way. When I didn't reciprocate the odd feature, he said "Sorry, I thought you were a boy scout." Afterwards I wondered what I'd missed out on: if I'd got the handshake right, what might have followed?

Or maybe all El Greco's subjects played snooker?

The webbed fingers, the fishy-looking faces with carbon-copy fish-blank expressions... El Greco was giving a shout-out to his Deep One buddies!

(... okay guys, you heard him say it... he lives somewhere in Ireland... make it look like an accident, it must look like an accident... meanwhile, I'll pump him for whatever else he knows....)

Interesting, Stevie. Tell me more about—um—that.

The masons have opened up their hall for public visits in Dublin lately, I supoose due to falling membership. It all struck me as a bit tatty and silly, like certain Universities which fetishize the past. It's all bullshit, it's just that some bullshit is viewed through a time telescope.

The El Greco hand signal has nothing to do with; Freemasonry, Rosicrucianisn, The Illuminati, homosexual come ons, Jewish ritual or the Vulcan salute. In fact, to this day, no one has a single clue what it means.

Clearly a signal was being passed to observers in the know (like Robert Wagner's brilliant code in the latest episode of 'Colditz') but art historians and occultists are still divided on what it means. Maybe we shall never know or the artist was merely taking the piss. Hard to believe, though, that, in the entire history of human interaction, no one else has ever used that signal. Three cheers for El Greco!!

There is a 'finger' theme throughout THE INMATES by John Cowper Powys. Also, this novel mentions El Greco on two separate occasions.
My RTR review of this book is here: http://nullimmortalis.wordpress.com/13740-2/

The hand is always held over the breast which implies some form of loyalty pledge. But loyalty to what...

Whatever it means, I look forward to the improbable novel by Dan Brown.
