So who's read the landlord's latest? Here's my spoiler-free review: http://www.gary-fry.com/2013/06/the-kind-folk-by-ramsey-campbell-review.html |

Good review, mate & I agree with all you've said. My own piece on THE KIND FOLK is coming out as part of my essay on Machen's influence on RC's work in the next issue of FAUNUS. |

I'm about two thirds of the way through. Along with Grin and The Darkest Part of the Woods, it's up there with one of my favorite RC supernatural novels. **POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW ** I'm a big fan of stand-up comedy and I really like how Campbell deals with it here. More specifically the idea of stand-up being a vent of the darker side of one's nature - something beyond control, almost a release of an innate insanity (or what another [less] kind would consider such). I feel as though it's an observation many stand-up comedians would admire. I also think it's as hilarious as it is fucking terrifying. |

Indeed, James. As much as I find a lot of mainstream entertainment vapid, there was something about Michael Barrymore at his most unhinged that was strangely compelling. Now we know why. |

I just received my copy yesterday, and read the first chapter before bed last night. Looking forward to more tonight! |

It's a very fine and intoxicating experience. Hope you're well, Huw. Long time, no communicado. |

Thanks, Gary. I haven't been around as much as I'd like of late, mostly due to my health and my ailing cat needing a lot of attention. I do try to stop by every day, even if it's just to check out a few threads and to see if Stevie has come up with any new Top Tens... My cat is having surgery on Friday, so I'm going to take The Kind Folk up with me to read at the hospital. I really need to read more - I've only read the odd short story so far this year, and no novels! Terrible state of affairs... Hope you're well. |

Wishing you and your cat all the best, Huw. Keep us posted how the op goes. I know what it's like to have a sick animal. I'd rather be unwell myself. I have two cats and four 3 week old kittens running about the house at the minute and the craic is ninety. Will be looking homes for the wee mites come the end of July. Parting is going to be tough... |

Thanks, Stevie. She is a beautiful Russian Blue cat who was abandoned by former owners as a kitten (that's how I came to find her), and although she's only just turned four, I've just discovered she has advanced chronic kidney disease. I'm hoping the surgery (to remove a large stone blocking her ureter) will help her live a bit longer and happier. The surgeon was very surprised to see a young cat with her condition, as it usually only happens in older felines. Good luck with yours - sounds like a happy and eventful household! |

My male is that beautiful blue grey colour too, Huw, and one of the kittens. He has vivid yellow eyes that make a striking contrast with his coat colour - as opposed to the more normal green eyes. Mum is a perfectly marked brown tabby and the other three are tabbies, one brown and two grey. They keep me entertained for hours watching them stumble about and play with each other. Must post some pics. Exotic breeds (particularly Persians) are prone to inherited kidney disease, Huw. Fingers crossed the operation sorts her out. |

I'm looking forward to reading the KIND FOLK soon. Ramsey's got a new novella out shortly, too, hasn't he? |

I'm almost afraid to ask but how did your cat get on, Huw? |
