Sorry to report that I've just spotted this on Facebook via Peter Coleborn: "OK, it's been confirmed and so here is the devastating news (via Rog Peyton): "It is with much sadness that I have to pass on the news that Birmingham author Joel Lane died in his sleep last night. He was only 50. Cause of death is unknown at this time but I’ll pass on any news I have as I receive it."

I don't know what to say. I'm shocked.

This is awful, awful news. Joel was a funny, warm, hugely talented person. I will miss seeing him at Fantasycon so much as I'm sure many of us will. He gave me so much pleasure with his incredible writing, and also helped to turn me on to Jazz. What a guy, such sad news.

I just saw it on FB too. Can't believe it. I knew he had been ill, but I had no idea it was so bad. So sad. Don't know what to say. The world will be a sadder place without his wit, wisdom and wonderful writing. RIP Joel.

I was just talking to Joel on here about 'Carrie' the other day. This can't be true. Joel is the heart and soul and brains of this site. His responses to my worthless witterings always fill me with joy and excitement. Like talking to Einstein about quantum physics and being treated as an equal. It just can't be true! I'm intellectually infatuated with the man ffs!! Respond, Joel, please...

Sorry, Stevie, it does sound from Facebook like the people who knew him well have checked and double-checked. It really does seem to be true. Though I must admit I half expect him to pop on here any minute and say "Ha! That got you all going, didn't it?" If only that could happen.

I am terribly sorry to say that it's true. I spoke both to Ramsey and to Joel's mother earlier this evening. He died in his sleep last night.

He was a brilliant writer, poet and critic of the genre, a deeply, funny, intelligent and compassionate man, and for the past fourteen or fifteen years, one of my closest friends.

Words cannot describe the magnitude of the loss.

This is like the most weird experience I've ever had. Crying over a man I never met and knew only by his intellect and his kindness and the few fleeting mental connections I had with the man via the bloody internet. I envy every single one of you who actually met him and knew him.

RIP Joel, my imaginary and very dear friend.

Just you and me up Steve...and the middle of the night for you. It is understandable Steve. He had that affect on us all. I thought he was an absolute genius to be honest. I had a great deal of respect for him. Adored him. He was the first to chide me when mistaken and he was always willing to support me when I needed it. He wrote to me last month saying he'd written me a long email (he knows I feel a bit cut off from all in NZ) and it got deleted by mistake. I'll never know what was in it now.

He was so worried about his mum falling or something and I really felt for him and never knew that he was I'll himself, Ally. I'd have asked after him and been kinder to him in return if I'd only known he wasn't well. I'm seriously gutted here and I never even met the man! I'm so glad now that I read 'The Earth Wire And Other Stories' and was able to realise what a bloody great writer he was and to be able to genuinely rave about him in my own stupid over enthusiastic way on here - that he chided me about. I really feel like I've lost a great friend. He was so nice to me all the time. I'm just sorry I wasn't gay as I really felt I was falling in love with the man and now he's gone ffs! Life isn't fucking fair, Ally! It isn't fucking fair!!

In the midst of life we are in death. I likewise never met Joel, but shall sorely miss his wit and wordplay, even his Marxist views. A couple of weeks back he said he was going "in hibernation" and that somehow triggered an alarm in me.

I am truly saddened by this terrible news. I had already selected his Autumn Leaves story for the Peeping Tom anthology and was touched by the enthusiasm of his response when I told him. Somehow that story sums up the man. He was sensitive, kind, intelligent and someone I loved talking and listening to, but above all, reading. He was part of our huge but close-knit writing family, a brother to us all. And, Hubert, I'm afraid your quote is spot on.

This is deeply upsetting news. Joel has always been kind and generous to me, in private and public. He was a good man, a finer writer than he knew (or was prepared to admit to), and more modest than was good for him. I hope that his recent World Fantasy Award win brought some joy to him in what turned out to be his final days.

Bless you, Joel. Sleep well.

That's a very moving tribute, Simon. I, too, only "knew" Joel through this board—always fiercely passionate, but I always gathered (and it seems to have been true) more compassionate than fierce. I wish I knew him better: he seems like a life incapable of not touching others, even thousands of miles away... I hope he knew that. A fine writer, a brilliant mind, and a real presence, to be missed.

I've just heard this terribly sad news, and can't quite take it in. Just last night I got my copy of Joel's The Earth Wire off the shelf to revisit. I can't believe it. He was about the same age as me, which is not that old, really.

Joel was (I can't believe I'm writing 'was' and not 'is') one of the most intelligent, kind-hearted, insightful, witty, knowledgeable and passionate people I've come to know online. I wish I'd had the chance to meet him in person. Condolences to those who knew him well. I'm sure he will be deeply missed by many.

I find that my reaction is just the word "No".

People speaking about Joel in the past tense.

The letters "RIP".

People saying how much they'll miss him.

No.

No, I'm sorry I can't even begin to take this in and I really will even forgive someone if they come clean and admit that this is some sort of sick joke. I've been posting on here for at least 12 years and Joel is part of the architecture. He's a sturdy column which overhead fans into a vaulted ceiling, connecting the earth and the sky, mundanity with star-studded profundity.

I've never met Joel, but I know that where his name appears, underneath will be words which are alight with integrity and eloquence. Even (especially!) when I disagree with him, I always welcome the passion of his idealism, the unapologetic nature of his intellectualism, the unalloyed ferocity with which he feels about the words and worlds inside his head and the people he passes on the pavement.

The man is alive.

So... for me, for now: no.

Just pour your heart out Ramsey. Like I did in my own impulsive way. Sometimes trying to phrase words is a handicap to genuine emotion. The man's gone. We'll never more thrill to the perfect instinctive responses he made to our careless witterings. The heart and soul and conscience has gone out of the RCMB but that doesn't mean there is no hope of us left behind. I, for one, as a committed socialist, will never let the fire of his integrity die on this site. He may have created a monster but I can think of no greater horror legacy to the great man's name. And he was a great man! Only yourself, Des and Tony even begin to approach him as a genuinely great writer of weird fiction!!!!

Just today I read of riots at Asda as people fought each other tooth and nail for transient bargains. What was I doing? Bringing a bag full of CDs down to sell in CEX for much needed cash ffs! I got £18 and mourned the passing of each and every disc like a child I was giving up to unknown adoptive parents. There's no time for such daft sentiment now and I'm only glad that the beautiful spirit of Joel has gone on to a better place before his corporeal form saw just how bad things are going to get!

You're my hero and my conscience from now on in, sir!

Ligotti 'The death of Joel Lane is indeed a sad loss, not only for those who knew him personally (a number that unfortunately I cannot count myself among) but also for ghost and gothic literature. Indeed, his contributions to these genres elevated their literary standing for over twenty-five years. All appraisal of this species of writing is now lessened by his absence. I recall marveling at the enviable and especially the urbane quality of his fiction in British fanzines as early as the 1980s, when he appeared in such publications as David Sutton and Stephen Jones’s Fantasy Tales and anthologies including Karl Edward Wagner’s Year’s Best Horror Stories. As I’ve remarked in interviews and elsewhere, I’ve always had a special admiration and appetite for British horror and ghost fiction, and Joel Lane was a master among his peers in that country. I also admired Joel as a literary critic. Among several examples of his critical acumen I relished was his essay on Robert Bloch’s contribution to the Cthulhu Mythos in the novel Strange Eons. This consideration of what is perhaps the best of Bloch’s novels stirred me to read and admire this work, which I had acquired from its publisher (Stuart Schiff’s Whispers Press) but had not yet read. On a personal note, I’ll always remember Joel’s extensive review of my omnibus collection The Nightmare Factory. His opening comment on the stories of mine that first appeared in this volume was simply the following: “They are excellent.” Coming from Joel, I felt confident that these new stories had succeeded, and a number of them have been since counted among my better works. I regret that I never communicated the appreciation and respect I held for him throughout his career.'

Everyone who even slightly connected with the man misses him dreadfully, Ally. His true friends must be devastated.

I well remember how much I enjoyed discussing Ligotti's great short novel, 'My Work Is Not Yet Done', with him earlier this year. It's a tragic loss to all of us on this site and far beyond. He'll go done as his own generation's Robert Aickman, imho.

Joel's fiction won't be forgotten so stop worrying yourself sick, Ally. Every one of his stories are like perfectly cut precious jewels. His reputation will continue to grow as did so many other great but unprolific weird fiction writers who specialised in the short story form over the last couple of hundred years. His achievement is untouchable.

I'll be fine but thank you, Stevie. Much appreciated. I've been working with the society on ways forward to vote for something and have written to James Barclay (new pres).'Is it still possible ( the case as in two years ago when a precedent was set ) to have an online vote/postal on something at the moment with exact wording have it voted for online/postal ..the result then taken to the AGM and put through without that wording being changed yet again...there.'

This on the Announcemnets Suggestions thread from me..'If I was going to spend £60 for an overseas membership I want to know what I'm joining. I'd at least want a postal/online vote (for anything that is proposed and at what point would I know?) I cannot attend an AGM as I live in NZ. How could my vote or that of a disabled member who could not attend be incorporated into a vote? There was no accessibility for the disabled to the room where the AGM was held either (stairs only). And if only 10 or so people turn up to an AGM (this last one was a handful of people) how can that be a fair system? Online/postal is the only way forward perhaps with discussions at the AGM and on the forum ....and online/postal voting a week or so later.'

Or as it has been suggested. Have a resolution, work it through with the members online/postal. Get it into good shape. Ask once more if members are happy and present the final draft (precedent been set for that at EGM two years ago) put it to the vote at the AGM. With proxy votes for the disabled who cannot get to Brighton/people who live half a planet away like me.

Last point. This is why I want Best Collection to be named after Joel.

One post of mine in the discussion on the BFS. That link..

'As Des says...and as I have shown with the Ligotti tributes (And the long list of others attached to Rosanne's tribute) Joel was a monumental figure in the genre. A giant in the genre and a genius in fact. He was a finalist in the BFS for Best Collection this year. Rob won with his fine collection. Joel will never....ever be able to be nominated again. The next best thing is to be honoured by having this award named after him.

Best Collection
From Hell to Eternity, Thana Niveau (Gray Friar Press)
Remember Why You Fear Me, Robert Shearman (ChiZine Publications)
Where Furnaces Burn, Joel Lane (PS Publishing)
The Woman Who Married a Cloud, Jonathan Carroll (Subterannean Press)'

I never retain my copies of BLACK STATIC – giving them away to deserving causes – but I do intend to re-read and re-review Joel’s SLEEP MASK story one day.
