I had a mildly Jamesian Christmas experience this evening. I went for a walk after dinner and the town was dead, of course, everything shuttered up and only the occasional dog walker to be seen.

In the centre of town we have a tiny cemetery hidden away between the backs of Main Street shops and pubs and some blocks of flats. It's so old some of the gravestones don't have writing on them, just symbols to represent the trade of the deceased. In the middle of the cemetery is a small building, an Aisle that is all that remains of the former kirk and is now the tomb of a local nobleman and his wife, with a large, impressive monument inside and a painted timber ceiling.

As I walking along a quiet back road I noticed over a wall that the Aisle was lit from the inside. This is unusual as it's never lit in the evenings, so I went and had a look over the wall but couldn't see anything except the illuminated windows. I checked both entrances to the cemetery and they were both padlocked shut with no sign of anyone around, not that I have any idea why anyone would visit a tomb on Christmas evening. Access to it requires a key from the local museum which is only open May-September.

Naturally, as an avid reader of horror stories, I decided to leave this mystery the hell alone and went on with my walk.

Awww David. Just think what a great story you could have made a local medium post here on your behalf if you'd investigated. That's a true missed opportunity.

My 4 year old great nephew Isaac asked his mum, my niece, on Christmas Eve 'Mummy, will you tell me when you're dead?'. I think I have a title for my next story...

Better still: "Mummy, will you tell me when I'm dead?"

Aah, think it through though. I'd start posting on here about the fumbling sounds at my door during the night, and the glimpses I see of something awful from the corner of my eye as I move through a crowd.

Then I'd suddenly stop posting.

Then one of you would feel compelled to investigate my disappearance and the curse would spread...

A bit late .. but I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

David - love your 'Christmas story' (true?). Thinking of your last comment about posting about fumbling sounds at the door, etc, for anyone who missed it Simon Kurt Unsworth did just that on his Facebook page over the last few days - posting occasional shaky phone pics and a few lines of text to scare the pants off us all. I always thought there was scope to turn a discussion board, Facebook or Twitter into a rather interesting story platform.

Think it through, Caroline. There are no fans more critical and appreciative of originality than those on this site. That idea, as alluring as it seemed, was always a non-starter. Yeah, I am a right fussy bastard when it comes to the things that I love!

Caroline, yes it's true. Sadly it was lit up by electric light, which is a bit less atmospheric. Or perhaps luckily, because if I'd seen some kind of flickering, eerie witch-light I expect I would have been unable to resist climbing the gate and going for a look.
