I was expecting too much from Gareth Edward's "Godzilla", though a better version than the former remakes. It's not Godzilla-centered. It seems most of the titanic devastation to be a mere collateral effect of the fight between the King of Monsters and the two winged Rodan-like predators. Godzilla, again, as Saviour of Humanity as in later, and softer, Japanese movies after the original Inoshiro Honda "Gojira". Where the ferocity of that first appearance? Where the sombre desperation? Where the darkness of collective nuke-inspired angst? All we have today is, and cannot but be, a juvenile rendering of that cosmic trauma.

The early trailers certainly made it look like it was going to be dark, sombre and desperate. It'll be a bit disappointing if the actual movie is something else entirely. I was going to try and make an effort to see it at the cinema but I'm not sure I'll bother now.

How was Cranston's performance?

I suppose Cranston to be the one playing the scowling marine soldier's father. I'd dare say he's the best in the bunch, too soon fading out (Juliette Binoche with him), to put up a convincing enough reappearance as the only one to be really in anguish at the situation. Of course, my whole appreciation comes from my personal corner of perception, so I wouldn't like anybody shying away from what could otherwise be a good movie. There are very positive reviews to be read around, balancing the bad ones.
