Just a quick one: how many of James Herbert's novels were published in hardcover? Anyone know? |

Hey Patrick, All of them, as far as I know. Have a look here - you can click on each title, and you'll get the publishing history. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/h/james-herbert/ |

What an odd quick question, Patrick.... Hey! I'm in a rush to catch the bus, late for work, boss on the warpath, but real quick, real important—exactly how many letters did Robert Bloch and Lovecraft exchange?

Not if you're into collecting hardback editions of books, Patrick, no. I thought it was rather a nice question. |

No harm intended. It was just funny to imagine it as a breathless question about something completely random and highly obscure; like a New Yorker cartoon. All in fun is all! Btw, I've never read a single word of James Herbert myself, despite King's high praise of him. Nothing against him, just never got around to it (I tended to read horror writers who wrote short stories, and to the best of my knowledge, Herbert's written extremely few if any). |

I read many as a young teen and just started rereading a few that I have fond memories of (Moon, The Survivor, Shrine), as I'm recollecting much of my book collection in hardcover. Only I don't think I've ever seen the very early novels in this format. I assumed they were originally published as "straight to p/b editions" but wasn't sure they'd ever been republished otherwise. |

The early ones are pretty pricey, in 1st edition hardcover. They were all re-released by Hodder, when Herbert switched over to Hodder, from NEL, but even these can hard to find/expensive because of the low print run. As an example of his early NEL hardcovers, a 1st edition hardcover of 'The Rats', in near mint condition, would go for anywhere between $700 -$1700. |

James Herbert was one of the great pulp horror writers of the golden era, and, by all accounts, a very nice man. His work could never be described as "literature" but he was a damn fine storyteller who always delivered. My own personal favourite is 'Shrine' (1983) - his scariest novel, imo. |

Patrick, all of Herbert's books appeared in hardcover. THE RATS, his first, was published in hardcover and paperback at the same time. As stated above, when he moved hardcover publishers from NEL to Hodder & Stoughton, all his books were reissued in hardcover format. Same thing happened when he moved to Macmillan from HarperCollins, with the exception of GHOSTS OF SLEATH and '48 (HarperCollins maintained the rights, and do to this day, as far as I know). |

Indeed, Jim himself designed the later ones. |

There's also a quite insightful look behind the scenes at the production work involved in marketing and designing his books in BY HORROR HAUNTED, edited by Steve Jones. Ramsey has a piece in the book as well, "Notes Towards A Reappraisal", if memory serves (reprinted in RAMSEY CAMPBELL, PROBABLY). |

I did, Mark, and later on I did the introduction to the Centipede edition of THE FOG. |

Can I read that anywhere other than in that Centipede edition? |
