Just watched it. It's well written and acted but a tad too oblique and lacking in resolution, for me, compared to the body horror classics we grew up watching from Cronenberg. This is an afliction that has increasingly affected his output since the last truly Cronenbergian film, 'eXistenZ' (1999). Since then he has only produced one true masterwork, imo, and that was 'Spider' (2002)... which successfully brought to life a Lynchian world of cinematic psychological nightmare.

It is my contention that cinema works best through presenting challenging and disturbing visuals, rather than well acted scenes of internal turmoil, and that Cronenberg would be wise to get back to what he does best. Don't hint at the unimaginable... show us it! Special effects are valid tools in the presentation of horror - body horror in particular - and this man used to be a master of their integration into intense psychological storylines.

Funnily enough I finally picked up a copy of Cronenberg's 'Crash' (1996) cheap last night. One of his finest later films and a pretty successful attempt to film Ballard's "unfilmable" novel. Haven't seen it since it was in the cinema so looking forward to a reappraisal.

Since his last great work, 'Spider' (2002), I've been consistently underwhelmed by his recent films and thought 'Cosmopolis' (2012), in particular, was an excruciating experience to sit through. I still hold out hope of him returning to his roots and the kind of original vision that made films like 'Shivers' (1975), 'Rabid' (1977) and 'Videodrome' (1983) such influential masterworks.
