Luckily I just happened to turn on the telly right as this was starting tonight, I hadn't heard anything about it before:

Michael Palin stars in this contemporary ghost story set in Yorkshire.

Tom Parfitt's arrival at a local retirement home leads to an eerie unexpected death. Who is to blame? Disillusioned cop Rob Fairholme can't find answers, but 18-year-old care worker Hannah is drawn to Tom's house and the mystery surrounding him...

Sunday nights at 9 on BBC1, though you'll need to iplayer it or whatnot now.

Michael Palin was good, but all rather reminiscent of Michael Hordern in the black and white WHISTLE. For me, there was too much going on, too much Aickman-like weirdness for it to be truly effective, too much heavy-handed atmosphere...

I really liked it, and there were some genuinely effective spooky moments to it. The BBC could do worse than to take a leaf out of its book for any future Ghost Stories for Christmas they may have planned.

Just watched it. I loved it. Excellent acting - especially Palin as Tom, and the young actress who's playing the care home worker.

The last 10 minutes of the story had me on the edge of my seat. Nicely jumpy! Yes, it's very reminiscent of the old Ghost Stories For Christmas. Creepily atmospheric. Hope they can keep this up for the 3 installments.

Oh, and I almost forgot to say ... I love seeing film/TV shot on location near where I live, like this is.

Hey, this sounds marvellous! Must catch it on iPlayer post haste!

Good to hear of Michael Palin getting a serious acting job again. I've always enjoyed him in anything he's been in - straight or comedic. Anyone here remember his sublime performance in Alan Bleasdale's 'GBH' (1991)?

I haven't watched it yet myself, I set it to record and may wait until the whole series is done to watch it.

I'm sure there's a joke to made regarding "Always Looks on the Bright Side of Life" and "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You" though.

Just watched the first episode on iPlayer and thought it was excellent. Like a cross between M.R. James and a J-Horror ghost story. Well acted, shot and directed with an intriguing plot that would appear to hark back to the days of the Raj and no doubt involves some ghastly oriental curse as revenge on Palin's former British overlord. Looking forward to episode 2 at 9.00 tonight!

Hmmm... episode 2 was a bit too sedately paced for my liking, with very little advancement of the plot or level of threat, and I wonder now if three hour long eps isn't way too much running time for a familiar ghost story like this. One feature length TV film, with all the slow moving extraneous material cut out, would have worked much better, imo. Here's hoping they get back on track and manage to up the ante in next week's conclusion.

Very derivative. I hold by what I said earlier on this thread about REMEMBER ME, the last episode being quite contrived. It was well produced, well acted, and Scarborough looked great as a setting, but a cynical and eventually failed attempt, I feel, to tap into all the good things about the BBC's MR James productions over the years. Worth watching to have a point of view on it.

Just finished watching this with part 3. I think they dragged it out too long over three episodes. It might have been better had they shortened it to two. I did enjoy it though, nothwithstanding this.

I wonder if they'll be repeating any of the old Ghost Stories for Christmas, or bringing us any new ones, this Christmas? Or was that it?

I watched this over the last three nights, I thought it was good overall. Some of the ghost appearances were a bit overblown, which affected their impact (and finding one seashell where it shouldn't be is uncanny, but finding a thousand is just silly) but the acting was excellent, the cinematography was gorgeous and it was good to see a serious ghost story on prime time TV.
