I see this place has gone quiet again, which feels sad but also like space.
Current thoughts; while not an Abrams fan, I am looking forward to Cloverfield Lane. It feels different. I've been watching a ropey looking tv series on reincarnation, ' The Ghost in My Child', which sounds rather dubious and IS roughly made, but also has some incredible stories that DO make you wonder, which can only be a good thing.
Also, I seem to have left both Facebook AND the internet, and the effect on my thought processes has been incredible - and my moods. I haven't felt this at ease in a LONG time. I also avoid the news; if something bad is going to happen, I'll hear about it from a friend, or see it happening.

I usually have little to say, which is why I don't post here. I'm a slower reader than I'd like to be, and read less that anyone would care to hear about than others. Space is good, probably, overall here, Tony. Otherwise, it WOULD be Facebook - we might obsessively check it and add to it and turn it into an addiction. I've never been on Facebook at all, Tony, and I feel I've missed out on nothing. Soon enough, there will be a turning against it - against this particular brand of social-networking, the monolith. Just like everyone has their own cell phone, they'll have their own social-network interactive methods - we've yet to reach that kind of individuality. I'm not even sure it's been conceived of yet, but it'll come.

I'm watching less TV and movies than ever myself. My favorite show, Shameless, I'm already like five episodes behind this season. I get so much more pleasure from reading than ever before - I just wish I could read faster, had more time. I'd read everything, good bad and in-between. With time/energy being limited, I'm forced to select what's best against my moods and objective measures of quality, as best as I can determine. So far, so good, I'm enjoying even the "bad" stuff.

Facebook seems to be like a conversation at a loud party. You have to shout over the din, coarsening your message and eventually, your thoughts.

If Facebook is a loud party, this place is more like a second hand bookshop.

Facebook is if anything a lot like an airport. I made some lovely friends there and it's been hard to let go, but it reveals your flaws and so many frightening or worrying stories and images get posted. It was the got me more than anything. This place feels like the load snug in the pub. It's intimate, I guess.

Oh, I generally don't use the notifications and feeds of other people. And I have 10, count them, 10 "friends". I think it's good for maintaining rather than making friendships.

I just watched THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE. I don't care that this is redundant: it's terrific. It was one of those films in which there's no barrier between the audience and the art. It affected me powerfully with none of the sometimes dutiful feeling I feel when watching a film that old. Dobbs being threatened at the end by the bandits was a powerfully dread-filled scene.

That's exactly how I'm feeling reading Charlotte Bronte. Nothing is rubbed in or put in just for style or effect. It's like she trusts us to get what she's saying. Treasure was a great film, as I remember. After moaning about modern stuff it FELT modern.

Yeah, it felt in places like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, and seems to be an influence on early Tarrant in.

Great movie, TREASURE. Funny, browsing through the library's for-sale section, that novel was there... fwiw.

Tony, Bronte trusting us "to get what she's saying" - exactly like all the Henry James I read recently. A very difficult reader stylistically (though he too has his periods - later James is much more demanding than early James), but the subtlety is non-pareil. One is greatly emotionally affected by everything not said in "Daisy Miller," in "The Aspern Papers," "Turn of the Screw"... and these are the shorter works. I'm meaning to hit either Portrait of a Lady or The Wings of the Dove soon... but it's not only their length, and the effort, but also the emotional journeys they're bound to take me on that keep me hesitating.

Charlotte's sister's sole novel, Wuthering Heights, is probably the finest novel of the entire Nineteenth Century. Sublime, wracking, grotesque, haunting, mysterious, Shakespearean. There won't be another like that one any time soon.

Wow. I did go on to read both Portrait of a Lady and Wings of the Dove! I actually did?!? I can't imagine my present self sitting down with those novels... cannot imagine it... but is that a good thing, or bad thing?...
