What would you like to do?
Today I'd like to go down into the Paris catacombs. I'd like to stay down there overnight. I'm just listening to a book about it - people have died exploring them, of panic or starvation. Can you imagine that? It's almost a wondrous way to die, to go missing.

I'd like to do what I did this morning. I live in the middle of Dublin, but there was silence this morning, almost no distant traffic. I grabbed a camera and went out shooting video of the street, experimenting with a new variable neutral density filter I bought which gives shallow depth of field in broad sunlight and can look quite beautiful. It's like being given a beautiful new paintbrush.

Then I came back, had breakfast and talked to a friend about an arts event she's doing to mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landings.

I'm not feeling spooky or catacomby today, but I do get the impulse and on another day would be into that idea.

I'd love to see these videos.
Narrow depth, is that when the foreground and background look blurry, like in old films? I miss that look. I miss dissolves, grain, the colours fading. Watch Jacob's Ladder even though it's not totally great, but for that faded, dirty look we don't see at all anymore.

I wish I could drive, just go off somewhere at any time I liked. My wife drives so that sort of dictates my choices. I'd be off in the night, parking in odd places, searching the skies or whatever. I used to want to live in a camper and go solving mysteries like Scooby Doo.
I wish I'd had actual girlfriends DURING my teens, to have memories of relationships. Women feel like strangers to me.
I wish I'd lived alone at some point, but never have. I now see that as a huge missed thing.
I wish I'd not chickened out from meeting Stephen King. Or talking to Nicholas Roeg in that corridor when I had the chance.

Depth of field is the distance from the camera that's in focus, so yes, a shallow depth of field means that only a limited distance from the camera is in focus.

I'd say that old look you're talking about in Jacob's Ladder might have more to do with the '80s era film stocks which were particularly grainy back then. (I know JL was early '90s.)

We all have regrets. Their only purpose should be to make use of them and make sure we change and/or don't repeat old mistakes. They should change our current and future behaviour. There's a period of mourning over things we regret, to come to terms with those things, but once that's done it's not productive to over-indulge in them.

You're right. But I'm just at a point where I have not much going on and feel quite isolated - by my own fears as much as anything, and finding not many great memories to look back on. Hey ho. It comes and goes.
