LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BOAT OWNERS IN CYPRUS

On purchasing/selling a boat it is necessary for the boat to be registered in the new owner’s name. 

The Vendor must have a Bill of Sale authorised by a local official.  The vendor must present the document with their passport and the original Note of Record naming them as the current owner.

The new owner will then be registered with supporting documents.

• Authorised Bill of Sale

• MS21

• Photocopy of new purchaser/s passport

• Photo copy of document showing address the boat will be registered at, such as utility bill, bank statement etc

• Radio license application

On completion of the registration the new owner is legally bound to have the boat available for a safety inspection.  There is a fee for this service which is payable to the Shipping Department .  On receipt of payment the shipping department will issue a letter to the registered address for the boat.  On receipt of this letter an appointment can be made by calling the number given.

A few days notice will be given.  You should present your boat for inspection with all necessary safety equipment onboard (a list can be down loaded from the Department of Shipping Cyprus’ website).

On successful completion of the safety inspection a letter will then be issued giving details of the fee for the Circulation license.  This will then be issued and is valid for 5 years or until the boat is re-sold.  The Circulation license is similar to a car’s MOT, without this license the boat should not be on the water, failure to have one if stopped by the marine Police you will not be allowed to enter the water or if at sea this can cause a heavy fine.

All the above paperwork can be carried out by My Boat Share for the fee of €100, this includes courier charges, transportation from our storage to the examination site and the supervision of the actual inspection.
