The RYA National Powerboat scheme is aimed at crafts up to about 10 meters (33 feet) and is recognised throughout the world. There are 4 key courses that offer progression from beginner to advanced. LEVEL 1
Aim: To enable you to drive a boat whilst under the supervision of a suitably qualified and/or experienced personExperience Required: No previous experience required, Length of cource: One Day Minimum age: 8 years old The course provide a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It includes:
LEVEL 2
Aim of Course: To enable you to become self sufficient in handling a power boat, in good conditions, staying locallyExperience Required: No previous experience required, Length of course: Two days Minimum age: 12 years old This is the most popular level, also known as the'National Powerboat Certificate'; those passing can apply to the RYA for the International Certificate of Competence (a recognised worldwide qualification). In addition to covering all in Level 1 above, it will also introduce:
INTERMEDIATE
Aim: To enable you to equipped to both plan and carry out short coastal passages during day light hoursExperience Required: Level 2 standard with coastal endorsement Length of course: Two days Minimum age: 16 years old At this stage the important skills of pilotage and passage are bought into play. The course includes:
ADVANCED
Aim: To enable you to undertake more challenging trips which may include returning to port/ or marina in darknessExperience Required: Level 2 standard and proficient in navigation and chart work to Day Skipper Level Length of course: Two days (including navigational exercise at night) Minimum age: 17 years old
