http://news.ninemsn.com.au/technology/8503399/awe-therapy-could-make-us-nicer I definitely get a sense of awe from reading some really good horror fiction. Nice to know it's doing me some good. |

Excellent. Confirms something I've intuitively felt for years. |

Thanks for posting this, David. I was talking about our perception of time with my brother earlier today, and about the kind of experience mentioned in this article. I think it really benefits us to have these experiences, and it's the reason I feel the need to get out of the city as often as possible (which still isn't often enough). I think it makes us healthier spiritually, as well as giving us perspective. |

Concerning the posited mental health values of awe, a host of Lovecraft's protagonists would beg to differ.... |

Interesting article - thanks for that, David. I certainly get a real buzz - what I call the "wow factor" - from reading much great horror fiction. Just thinking, without wishing to embarrass anyone, who in recent times has been giving me that wow factor? Ramsey, of course, Pete Crowther is another one, and (sorry to embarrass you, Des) quite a lot of DFL shorts do the same to me. A lesser-known author I've recently raved about, Tim Jeffreys, does the same. But I think the biggest wow factor I get nowadays must be from Reggie Oliver's short stories - I get that sense of awe from almost everything he writes. More power to you horror authors who have the ability to give me that wow factor! |

There was a chap looked into religion, followed a different one a month as an experiment. He said he felt happier following religion than not, that each had some good to offer. |

I had genuine mystical experiences when I first read Machen at age 17, especially major stories like "The White People", "The Great God Pan" and "The Inmost Light". When I read them now I recall the erstwhile feeling of exaltation, but somehow it cannot be reproduced. |

Apparently there's going to be some impressive meteor showers visible over the weekend of 11th to 13th this month. With the above in mind I might make an effort to get out of town and watch the sky for a bit, if the weather's decent. |

Just check that a bunch of moving plants don't escape on that night. |
