Just last night I learned from Jeremy Dyson that four of Aickman's tales were included in this six-part HTV series in 1987. He hasn't seen them, nor have I, alas. Here's to their rediscovery and a DVD release! |

It's almost Ancient Images-esque in its obscurity to track down, do doubt. The film in the book, not the actual book (: |

The four Aickman stories were: "The Hospice", "The Inner Room", "Hand In Glove" and "The Trains". I've only read the second and fourth of those and consider 'The Inner Room' one of the ten greatest short horror stories ever written. I wonder what the other two stories in this series were? |

Hopefully these are better than the adaptation of "The Swords" I saw a few weeks ago. |

Yes, that adaptation was just about as far removed from the spirit of Robert Aickman as one could imagine. 'The Hunger' was very hit-and-miss but with some great standout episodes, particularly in the much stronger 2nd series. |

Yeah, that's it -- "The Hunger." The filmmaker clearly didn't get what Aickman was about. |

I thought it was terrible too. It captured none of the strangeness of Aickman's story. I'm intrigued about this Night Voices series, though! It seems as though nobody knew it even existed until now (nobody on any of the horror/supernatural fiction boards I've frequented over the years has ever mentioned it). Makes you wonder what else might be out there... |

I've watched the first few episodes of The Hunger TV show, and it seems to me it isn't a horror series, but a soft porn series using horror stories as a basis for showing arty, soft-focus titty shots. It's utter garbage. |

I have only seen a few of the episodes, and most seemed to suffer from an excess of 'style' at the expense of substance. Having said that, I remember not disliking the adaptation of Lisa Tuttle's story 'Replacements'. I haven't seen the version of Ramsey's 'The Seductress'. |

Well I've sat through the entire two series of The Hunger and for the most part it's exactly what Zed says, but the first episode of the second series (with David Bowie & Giovanni Ribisi) is worth watching, as are Bowie's Tony Scott-directed intros to the other episodes. The adaptation of Replacements is very good indeed but there aren't many others that make it worth sitting through. The Seductress isn't bad either. |

The series 'Night Voices' is one that I myself brought up at the Robert Aickman event last October in Halifax and through endless searching finally managed to find two episodes from in November; namely 'The Hands of Orlac' and 'The Hospice'. Now to put it plainly 'Orlac' is a big steaming pile of horse manure, Robbed of any potential interest by some truly inept dubbing. But 'The Hospice' thankfully is quite another matter. Although the statue and cat attack scenes right at the start of it do it no favours, the rest that follows is a strong and surprisingly faithful adaptation of the Aickman classic. The performances are nearly all good (particularly Jack Shepherd and Alan Dobie as Maybury and Falkner) and the whole thing is infused with a very real sense of 'weird vigour' that stays with it all the way to the end. All in all, I really do recommend 'The Hospice' which, for my money at least, is now the strongest Aickman adaptation that I have yet seen. Now if I can only find the other three out there ....... |
