On Saturday morning the wife and I took our son and his wee mate to see the new Pixar film UP, and what a rare treat it was. Like every Pixar offering, this was filled to the brim with genuine heart, emotion...and soul. There's a ten-minute sequence near the start of the film, charting the span of a relationship across almost a lifetime, that I defy anyone to watch with a dry eye. Utterly, utterly brilliant - verging on genius, if I'm honest. I adored this film. Adored it. Then, late Saturday night I foolishly watched the Michael Bay produced abortion that is the FRIDAY THE 13th remake. Everything is wrong with this film. No heart, no integrity, no soul. Just empty scene upon empty scene, lacking in even the visiual flair demonstrated by director Marcus Nispel's earlier TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake (which I thought wasn't bad at all). |

Really looking forward to 'Up' and will try to go tomorrow if I can get in. It's been booked out solid since it opened here. 'Wall-E' was a contender for my film of last year and by all accounts this is even better. |

Glad to hear Pixar haven't lost their heart after being gobbled up by Disney. Things are looking Up. |

'Up' was amazing- the usual very high standard from Pixar. It was so wonderfully surreal as well. I will make the same non-comment about Friday the 13th remake: no comment. |

I loved the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake. But then, I loved the Snickers snack-sized bar I shoved in my mouth last night (and I really did).... |

I liked UP, but thought it also predictably brilliant. Is that strange? Is it wrong to be a little shruggy about excellence? I wasn't keen on Friday 13th. Like the trailer though, very much. |

I sort of liked the bravely insane Hollywood Chihuahua more than up, even though Up made me cry. Help me, people. Pixar might never lose their heart, but I sort of wish they would... |

Maybe you'd prefer CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS. Mark Kermode said it's seriously weird and edgy, described it as Lynchian, but the characters all feel real. Cheer up, Tone! (not an order, a hope...) |

I've heard of that one. Sounds good. For me Up had all the great qualities, but felt a bit 'glass wall'. Pixar need to do 'something', but what? Adapt Bradbury? Do something a little sidelong? (what ever that means). I'm just sadly a little weary of their schtick. |

Stephen! Yes, maybe depressed. I'm sort of used to it though, so it's not too bad. Just feel perpetually unexcited. I'm sort of more worried by the fact it's so unexplained... |

Close Encounters of the Third Kind back in the seventies was my big wow movie of all time. I've been looking for that feeling ever since, and never found it. Maybe that's what's wrong, movie-wise. |

Maybe a new pet would help? Or a new hobby different from anything you've tried before - white water rafting? Or try losing yourself in a mindless blast-em-up computer game to relieve those tensions! I'm only ever depressed in the immediate aftermath of a relationship break-up and for a while you do lose all interest in your other "loves". Sex with a new person soon kicks it all into gear again though... or is that just me? |

This was my precise view on the film. In fact, I was quite angry while watching it, between the bits where I was crying and being agog with wonder. Yes - the logic of the balloony house just irked me; fantasy HAS to be tinged with reality. This was lazy, as was the plot. |

It's the start of the inevitable Pixar backlash, if you ask me. We humans (especially Brits) are great at it: love 'em until they get too big for their boots, and then shoot 'em down and poke 'em with sticks. |

Oh, I'm not shooting them down - I'm just willing them out of what feels like a scary rut. I love most of their films, I'm just also scared they're able to disguise certain lazy bits with technique and 'aw, bless' stuff. I loved those opening scenes but groaned at 'the man' stuff, and who the bad guy was, and the running about (which while it looked great I could have had half an hour outside smoking a fag - but then that's a lot of films now). But loads of other bits were really good, and it ended well. |

I just have 0 desire to see UP. I have 0 desire to see WALL-E. Or lately, any animated movie - like the upcoming AVATAR. 0 desire on that one too. I liked CARS - was that what it was called? - but it was nothing special. I must be getting older, because the razzle-dazzle does nothing for me. Especially sanitized razzle-dazzle. Imagine if Pixar had animated FUNNY GAMES. It would be... what's the word?... clearly I'm feeling compelled to vomit at the prospect, but I'm not sure why I am.... |

Pixar's mission is accomplished. We don't need to see them again. So too Empire magazine, which each issue is filled with lists of 'best of's' or whatever, or congratulating themselves on however many years they've been around. Every sixth issue is their fucking anniversary or some such bullcrap. |
