I think he might have been kidnapped.

Either that or he had a really strong curry and he's not left the bathroom for a week or two...

I don't want to speak for Zed, but I think he got a bit hacked off with all the fighting a couple of weeks ago and is taking time out.

I for one, hope he comes back when he wants to.

I'm all for Zed returning. Again, when he likes.

Granted, once he returns, I'll start freaking him out by pledging my eternal love for him…

Is is only my perception, by the way, or is he having about 87 books of his being launched at WHC? There's this one, the Ash-Tree one, and I'm pretty sure there's at least one more (Morrígan?).

Does he sleep? Dopes he compose stories whilst having a bath? He's not yet chucked the day job, and his output seems even incredible for someone who does write full-time…! Is he actually two different people?

I hope Zed comes back too.

Ian, I think Zed is having a super-prolific phase like Lovecraft in 1926-7 or Bradbury in the late 1940s. He's on a roll. What's especially good to see is that he's 'making it' at a professional level, while still writing the kind of specialist press gems that mean so much to losers like us. It's like watching a comet pass by: don't ask how, just remember it so you can tell the next generation (if there is one) what you saw.

None of us are losers - we simply aspire to the aspirations that suit us best.

I've always admired the career of Zed since reading him in Nasty Piece of Work in 1998 - and his honourable mention or two in Nemonymous - and real-time reviewing his work in recent years. Zed is the Zed Male. Far better than any Alpha imitation. :-)

And may his current 'on-a-roll' (identified appropriately by Joel above) become exactly what Zed wants it to become.

I think his ambition is matched by his talent. He isn't content to just prattle around at a modest level. It strikes me that many of his peers would do well to follow his lead, but fear of failure halts their effort.

"None of us are losers - we simply aspire to the aspirations that suit us best."

Exactly. We all have levels of 'success' which suit us. As long as you are happy at the level you are, then you are - A success.

(More sales are always good though..:-))

And Zed's work has a lot of commercial potential.

I couldn't read this without passing comment - thank you folks, for all your kind words and support. Seriously. It really is very much appreciated.

I'll be back, just not yet. I'm so busy that it's actually becoming rather surreal. I'm currently working at night on the Angry Robot books and have a new three-book deal in the pipeline which I'll announce as soon as the contracts are signed. Also we're putting our house on the market and looking for a new place, so I'm trying to fit in a lot of DIY/tidying/viewings around the day job and the writing.

I'll return here when everything calms down a bit...there are several of you on here whose banter I miss very much.

As I said elsewhere - on the strength of one story - he appears to have the storytelling ability and attention to detail of a Stephen King. So I'm not really surprised at this sudden surge of success.

Having said that I still consider the finest authors I have read material by on this site to be Ramsey Campbell and the man Tony (who has a sense for the poetically haunting that is very fine indeed). While the regular on here I am most looking forward to reading (through pure instinct) is Joel Lane.

"Say it as it is" has always been my motto...

So… three book deal, working on completing the Angry Robot thingamajig, selling house, moving house, viewing potential new houses to select one to move to, researching DIY things (presumably both on old and new houses)… I'd ask if the house moving was due to Emily being pregnant, but you clearly haven't the time nor the energy for that.

I've read some books by many people here, but never Joel's books. This must mean that a) I'm broke, b) I'm clearly wasting my time reading books by losers, or c) Joel's books are insufficiently important for me to bother with. Pop by the table at WHC, Joel, and introduce mew to a book with your words inside (preferably English ones).

Yeah, Arthur Meadows. A Yorkshire shopkeeper who sells manky oranges to grannies who suffer short-sightedness. He's also been known to frighten local kids with his (in his view) sterling impression of a kangaroo. He keeps his hands in his pouch and never stops clicking and licking his lips. The kids have nightmares. He's that kind of fella. Arthur Meadows. You heard about him here first.

I've killed men for less than that, Lynch.

Life's work has a possesive apostrophe, does it not? It is the work of my life, my life's work. I have only one life (as fars I know a), so the apostrophe is valid.
