Tonight at 9pm BBC4 - Julien Temple's film of the first (and, in my opinion, best) incarnation of Dr Feelgood. C'mon, guys - this band was a huge part of my formative years! Watch it even if it's only so you can laugh at me afterwards! http://alternative.artsalliancemedia.com/oilcity/ |

This film is an awesome prospect. Without Dr Feelgood there'd be no Stranglers or The Jam. And Wilko Johnson's lyrics gave them an ironic sharpness that cut to the bone. Forget the turgid public schoolboy 'hard rock' of heavy metal: the Feelgoods were hard bastards through and through, but their material had economy and grace. I paid £40 (I think) to quote one line of a Dr Feelgood song in a story as yet unpublished. Worth every penny. |

I will say though....I am a bit of a sucker for the Gypie Mayo era... As we were saying last weekend, gcw - I think it's the lineup of a band when you first discover them that is the one that means most. Mayo was an excellent guitarist and a lively performer, but didn't, for me, stand out so well as Wilko Johnson (even though Wilko based his guitar playing style on that of Mick Green from The Pirates). A friend said to me a few years back "guess who I had a pint with last night - only the bass player from Pink Floyd!" - "Roger Waters?" I asked... He looked puzzled and said "no, Guy Pratt". I guess we all like different band lineups but that one did throw me for a moment. |
