Dear all, Just to announce a brand new horror anthology which will be available in just a week . . . WHERE THE HEART IS A GUIDED TOUR OF BRITISH HORROR edited by Gary Fry Take an alternative tour of Great Britain . . . Writers are often told to write about what they know best . . . and what do they know better than their own homes? In this anthology, 19 fine authors of dark fiction reveal some of the less palatable elements of their native environments. There’s blood where the heart is. Much blood. Superb new stories by: Stephen Volk Rhys Hughes Gary McMahon Paul Finch Joel Lane Simon Bestwick Gary Fry D F Lewis Andrew Hook Allen Ashley Stuart Young Simon Kurt Unsworth Carole Johnstone Michelle James Stephen Bacon John Travis Mark Patrick Lynch Mark West Mike O'Driscoll Paperback: £8.99 / $16 (+p&p) ORDER NOW: http://www.grayfriarpress.com/catalogue/whereheart.html
Best wishes - Gary Fry www.grayfriarpress.com |

Thanks, guys, and yes, if you want me to devalue the book by signing it, I certainly will, though why you'd want to solicit damage to something you've just bought is beyond me, it's like going into Dixons and asking the highly trained staff there (yes, I'm quite mad) to drag their nails down the side of that nice new stereo you've just bought so that it looks scuffed and flawed when you finally place it in your showpiece room at home. Like, innit. |

Dr Who feels increasingly like by-the-numbers television. You can almost write the lines in your head before their spoken, and the plot twists are samey. Not very imaginative for a show that used to be driven on the strength of sheer imagination. |

It gives me an excuse to hunt down all the authors, confront them with a pen, and ask them to scribble all over their stories for me. I started reading it last night - and loving what I've read so far. No time to make further comments today though - dashing out shortly ... |

Rene Descartes walks into a resturant and sits down for dinner. The waiter comes over and asks if he'd like an appetizer "No thank you" says Descartes, "I'd just like to order dinner" "Would you like to hear our daily specials?" asks the waiter "No" says Descartes, getting impatient "Would you like a drink before dinner?" the waiter asks Descartes is insulted, since he's a tee-totaler "I think not!" he says indignantly, and POOF! he disappeared. |

Here's a question for you Des - probably a bit of a daft one. Do you think it's important to start at the start of a book and read it through to the end? The thing is, most of the stories I've read from this book so far are ones you haven't reached yet, and I notice you comment regularly about the gestalt of a book. Now, I don't start at the end and work my way to the front, but - with any collection or anthology - I dip in at different points, going to which ever story takes my fancy at the time. But is it important to read them in the particular order the editor desires? (Maybe Gary and anyone else who's edited a book could answer this too?) For my part, with this book, I've taken a trip to most of the North of England locations first - starting in Leeds, Dewsbury and Wakefield, going up to the North York Moors, and then popping over the Pennines. Oh, I did briefly take a trip by the seaside with you, Des. And then I went down to London and over to the place of my childhood, ie. Bristol (this quote from 'Easter' - "They say you have two homes in life, one where you're born and one you find" - sums it up for me. The West Country was my birth home and then I found Yorkshire!) Really enjoying the book - some of the stories are quite weird. Just my cup of tea! |

A story, Mark, I believe, that thoroughly deserves such comments. I take as I find. |

I think books are like albums, that they mesh together better in order. But then ipod shuffle has thrown up some marvels of clashes, absolutely stunning connections. |

Thanks, Des! The order of this book dictated itself: it's geographical arranged from south to north. (Leaving the best till last, natch. ) |

As I said to Caroline: everyone has their own method to harvest serendipity |

Ah, but Tony, I have a habit of starting on side 2 of an album too! Funny that, I've always liked to find my serendipity in different ways to most people. Now, I don't want to embarrass anyone here, but I've just got to say this. Last night I read the most superb story. It's one of those stories which left me with a tingle down the spine and the word "Wow!" on my lips. Simultaneously beautiful and horrible. Zed, has anyone ever told you you're a ruddy brilliant writer? Des - waiting till I've finished reading the whole book before I read your review. I'm certainly enjoying all of it, but "We Are The Doorway" smacked me right in the face (in a good way, if that makes any sense). |

Interesting review (as usual), Des. I must admit, I was holding my breath as you approached my story...thank God you liked it. Thanks for the kind words. I can put away the razor blades now. |

I only included Zed's story because he's got that photo of me - the one with the spring cabbage and Moira Stewart. Relieved to hear folk are liking it. |

I picked up my copy last Friday. I always get my mail late through choice, but I'm not as odd as that makes me sound. I blogged about it briefly here: http://rhysaurus.blogspot.com ...but I don't say anything profound about it, so there's no need to go there in a flustered rush! I do, however, suggest that the guiding principle of the anthology be extended to include the countries of the EU -- in other words an anthology of international stories, one author per country. Could be interesting? |

>>I do, however, suggest that the guiding principle of the anthology be extended to include the countries of the EU -- in other words an anthology of international stories, one author per country. Could be interesting?<< What an excellent idea. Indeed, should it be limited to the EU? A truly international volume, taking in all continents, would be awesome. By the way, Rhys, "Cuckoos of Bliss" was amazing! |

Thanks for that compliment, Caroline! My forthcoming Ex Occidente collection (The Impossible Inferno) contains plenty of stories in the same spirit as 'Cuckoos', i.e. generally darker than my usual stuff; and the book should be available at the end of the summer. My apologies for that's opportunistic, rather tasteless piece of self-promotion! |
