Wow. I had a friend who got back a rejection, that just said "Crap" on it. A long time back, I wrote a script in collaboration with another author. The scathing coverage we got back had this line in it: "These authors display no talent for writing whatsoever." I'll treasure those words forever.... |

The funny and mildly (or greatly) offensive ones are worth getting. I once got two rejections for the same story from the same place, months apart, as the person who rejected the tale clearly decided they hadn't been hard enough on it first time around (I didn't sub it twice). The second rejection carried a bit more venom. I was tickled the tale had styed in her head so long that she felt she had to get in touch, even now, to say that she disliked it more than she'd previously said. |

I once sent a story to a science fiction magazine that rejected it, so I sent another (totally unrelated) story to the same magazine. It was rejected with the comment: "I see you've changed the title. I still don't like the story." Oddly enough, I didn't try again. |

I've been asked several times to translate this or that good soul's worthy prose into English: "If you manage to get the story accepted, I'll pay you upon publication." "Excuse me?" |

Oh, I had one along the lines of "This story is well-written with good character development, but [insert name of publication] is not interested in this sort of thing." Made me laugh, anyway. >>No what??! I'm assuming it didn't qualify for a thank you after the no, Gazza. Or they just thought it a bad idea from the beginning, which is probably an insightful comment. |
