This might be of interest to some of you... Each Sunday or Monday I'm posting a short piece on my website about my personal "Desert Island Horror Stories" - basically, these are horror stories that I consider indispensable, for a whole variety of personal reasons. I've just posted week 2: http://www.garymcmahon.com/p/desert-island-horror-stories.html |

Like it!! I've read neither of those two stories, Gary... but you've whetted my interest, and you've teased me with having to come back and see what you're going to pick next.... |

Good stuff, Zed. 'Only Partly Here' is a great story. Lucius Shepard is one of the very best living writers, in my opinion. He has a wide range, being able to switch between horror, fantasy, and science fiction with ease. He has an incredibly fertile imagination and a wonderful way with language. One of the biggest strengths of his fiction, for me, is the vividness with which he brings different locales to life (he's obviously traveled a lot, especially Latin America). He's also very good at conveying the emotions and relationships of his his characters. I don't think I can think of another contemporary author who does this as well as Shepard (the late Jack Cady, perhaps). I haven't read any Bukowski, but he sounds like someone I should look into (I've seen Barfly, if that counts... ). |

Ooh, I love people enthusing about short stories. I'd read the Shepard tale but not the Bukowski one. I'll be following your future posts with interest, Gary. |

Look forward to this every week, Gary. You've inspired me to order 'The Dark Country', and I started 'Red Dreams' last night. |
