http://primetime.unrealitytv.co.uk/doctor-whos-elisabeth-sladen-has-died/ I'm quite shocked by this. I didn't even know she was ill. |

Me too. At least she was 'back' and in her own show, and not forgotten. |

Oh no, you're kidding! I didn't even know she was ill either. She always looked so good for her age too! I'm hoping this isn't true (the site mentions "rumours") but if it is, RIP Liz, you were a real favourite with all the fans. |

I feel so bad. I just returned the first season of the Sarah Jane Adventures to the library without having watched any of it. I know that's ultimately meaningless, but still... |

Oh christ, no. Shit. I loved Sarah Jane Smith. First the Brigadier, now her. She was a truly talented and charming actress, and I wish she'd done more film and TV work. RIP Lis. |

Very sad news. She'll always be a part of my memories of childhood. Saturday evenings, the pools results, ice cream and canned orange bits, Sarah-Jane Smith and the Doctor. |

My son, Charlie (he's seven) got a bit upset, too. He said that he "really liked that Sarah Jane lady"...when I told him Daddy used to fancy her when he was younger, the mood lifted as he laughed his arse off. RIP to a memorable, talented (and very beautiful) actress. |

A friend told me her kids loved the spin-off show as well. It's nice that she charmed a new generation of children. Hopefully their dads will cheer their kids up in the same way as you, Gagsy... |

I've just heard this news and I'm genuinely shocked! She still seemed so fresh and young. One of my first childhood crushes gone forever... |

A real pity. I've just been watching The Ark from Space and she was definitely the best of all the girlies fluttering around the doctor. |

I almost felt like I knew her, even though I never met her. That's how familiar she was to me in my youth, and when she returned in the new Who she'd hardly changed. What a sad loss. |

Really surprised how upset I am at the news, actually. Saw this little cartoon today which manages to be sweet, funny and truly poignant all at once- never a mean feat: http://www.dorktower.com/2011/04/19/dork-tower-wednesday-april-20-2011/ |

I remember not liking her when she took over from mini-skirted Jo Grant but by the end of 'The Time Warrior' I was hopelessly besotted. Rather worrying, in a way, because I was only eight!! |

What a shock this news was. I too had no idea she was ill. My daughter will be saddened too as she watched the Sarah Jane Adventures religiously. Elisabeth's appeal was truly across the generations. And days before the new series begins... |

First Nicholas Courtney and now Elisabeth Sladen. This is sad news indeed, and totally unexpected. |

There is a 1976 Doctor Who from 1976 on BBC4 TV tonight in her honour, I understand. |

Oh dear, I missed that. What story was it? I'm really getting in the mood for watching some old Doctor Who again soon - since new Who is failing to ignite any kind of spark for me at the moment. |

Caroline, it was 'The Hand Of Fear'- Sarah Jane's last adventure in the original series. (Not counting 'The Five Doctors', etc.) |

Ah, for some reason I thought it might be! Funny, I have the Target novelisation of that - signed by Lis Sladen - on my shelf in front of me now. I'll take a look at the TV listings and see if it's on iPlayer or something so that I can watch it later. Thanks, Simon. |

My own memory of 'The Hand Of Fear' is that after that things started to slide downhill with 'Doctor Who'. The rest of the Tom Baker years were still good, just not as good, then they lost the plot with a young unconvincing Doctor and things were never the same again, sadly... |

That was precisely when it started to go downhill for me too, Stevie. But in my case, it had a resurgence when I hit my second childhood with Sylvester McCoy in the role! |
