Just to get us started:

The Tomorrow People,
Sapphire and Steel (originally started as a kid's show),
Jamie and the Magic Torch,
Bagpus,
Threads (no kidding, but it was used for educational purposes in some schools...apparently)
Scooby-Do (without Scrappy)
Danger Mouse
Jack-a-nory

That's just for now.

Does anyone remember The Three Conkle-Bonkles? Originally German, I think, and dubbed for British television.

Singing Ringing Tree!

I rewatched Sapphire and Steele recently and went off it - plodding, repetitive, drawn-out. All more faults than good. :-(

Anything by Oliver Postgate heads the bunch for me, with 'Noggin The Nog' probably his crowning achievement. I also have subliminal memories of being scared witless by 'Pogle's Wood' in the 60s. Then there's 'Bagpuss', 'The Clangers' & 'Ivor The Engine'. Pure magic.

The original pre-Scrappy years of Scooby Doo which have pride of place in my horror DVD collection (no kidding).

'The Banana Splits' and all those great cartoons it incorporated, particularly 'The Arabian Nights' - size of a flying horse, etc.

'Danger Mouse' - the funniest kids cartoon ever to come out of Britain, it still cracks me up.

'The Herbs' - herbidacious!

Anything by Gerry Anderson, with 'Thunderbirds' & 'Stingray' my favourites but the man could do no wrong, right up to and including the wonderfully ridiculous 'Terrahawks'. Great stuff.

I always loved all those early anime cartoons, such as; 'Marine Boy', 'Battle Of The Planets', 'Ulysses 31', etc.

More as they come to me...

The Tomorrow People (the first series, which was properly creepy - I rewatched one a few years ago)

Shadows

Children of the Stones

Sky

King of the Castle

And yes Frank - Threads was shown in our school as an educational film.

I have the DVD of 'The Singing Ringing Tree' and it's still as weird as I remember it. That's another one that kind of freaked me out as a kid.

The best of the European live action series was the magical adaptation of 'The Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe' with Robert Hoffman. I keep meaning to get the DVD of that.

'Trumpton', 'Chigley' & 'Camberwick Green' with the sublime narration of Brian Cant (a god among men).

I have the DVDs and wouldn't part with them for love nor money. Talk about spine-tinglingly nostalgic, brrrr...

I remember when my dad first wrote THE TOMORROW PEOPLE. For a brief time at school I had total hero status, as almost nothing like that - aside from Dr Who - had previously been seen on children's TV.

Glad JLP mentioned CHILDREN OF THE STONES. That was a classic, as of course - and JLP is owed yet another pint for bringing this one up a good few months ago - SHADOWS.

Yep, and I'm not modest about it as I think it was an amazing achievement at the time and something well worth boasting about. He wrote most of the first two series, I think, but didn't stay on after that.

40 years on, my mum still gets royalties for it. Now that's called writing for a living.

okay...

Stingray
The Fintstones
The Singing Ringing Tree
Robinson Crusoe with tht amazingly emotive theme tune.
The Boys Who Stole the Moon - wonderfully surreal and quirky, the kids were Polish In fact, the twins who later took over Poland. One of them became Presidnet and took a plane trip to Russia...
Swallows and Amazons - the 1960s series.
Deputy Dawg
Top Cat
Object Z - a long ago kids sf series
Some episodes of Lost in Space - most of it became utter crap but there were a few outstanding stories. I was also hoeplssly in love with the gorgeous Marta Kristen (Judy Robinson) but hated that clever dick bloody kid, Will.

I'm sure there are more...

Cheers

Andy Bloody Pandy
The Wooden Bloody Tops
Joe-Damn-90
Circus Bloody Boy with an awful gooey sickly sweet Micky Dolenz
Land of the Ruddy Giants
Belle and Bloody Sebastian
Topo Grind Grimwod into the Ground Gigo or something similar, some stupid mouse puppet.

Ah, TinTin, yes, how could I have forgotten that?

Especially the moon story.

My first memories of television are "Ollie the Owl", Gerry Anderson's "Torchy" and "Wonder Car" (or as it "Super Car"?) and "Space Patrol", which might have been Anderson, I'm not sure. I think most of thsoe were aired around about 1962/63.

I also used to love "Crackerjack" with Eamon Andrews and then Leslie Corwther. I don't think it was so much the programme as the fact it was Friday night that give me fond memories.

top me now, I'm starting to wallow in nostalgia...

Regards
Terry

Oooo, lovely nostalgia!

Here's mine (in no particular order, except the first):

Doctor Who
Lost in Space
Star Trek (original series)
anything by Gerry Anderson
Twizzle (anyone remember him? The puppet boy whose arms and legs used to stretch - quite scary)
The Magic Roundabout
Captain Pugwash
Bill and Ben (in fact, almost all the Watch With Mother things - though I thought Andy Pandy was a bit of a drip)
Jackanory
Daktari (anyone remember Clarence, the cross-eyed lion?)
Champion The Wonder Horse
Follifoot (apologies for the last two, but I was a little girl and little girls love horses)
The Clangers
Tom and Jerry
Mr Magoo
Felix The Cat
Deputy Dawg
Top Cat
Wacky Races
The Flintstones
The Wooden Tops (I loved Spotty Dog!)
Scooby Doo (original)
Crackerjack
Blue Peter
The Man From UNCLE (could we call that a kid's show? Loved it anyway. Loved David McCallum!)

I'm sure there must be more - I'll pop back later if I remember any others.

BTW I hope we're not DELIBERATELY ignoring Ramsey's question way back near the start of this thread! Sorry, Ramsey, I've not heard of that one at all.

Caroline, all the girls loved David McCallum. My cousin Sue was crazy about him (and I was crazy about my cousin Sue - is that allowed?). She loved "DR Kildare" as well.

Did you see David McCallum as the radio opeator in the best Titanic film ever made, "A Night to Remember"?

"Bill and Ben" yes, the only WWM I liked.

Caroline - I think you and I must be of a similar age (mid-thirties, in case anyone's wondering!) - I even used to watch Follyfoot, but mainly because I fancied the girl in it. I watched White Horses for the same reason...
Lost in Space was great, although not quite so good now on DVD.

"Caroline, all the girls loved David McCallum. My cousin Sue was crazy about him (and I was crazy about my cousin Sue - is that allowed?)."

Ah but, Terry, were you ever as drop-dead gorgeous as David McCallum? Go on, you can tell us. If you were, you and your cousin might have ended up as kissin' cousins!

Can't say as I've ever seen McCallum in much else. I did try Saphire and Steel, but couldn't get into it - so I transferred my affections elsewhere at that point.

"Caroline - I think you and I must be of a similar age (mid-thirties, in case anyone's wondering!) - I even used to watch Follyfoot, but mainly because I fancied the girl in it. I watched White Horses for the same reason..."

Mick - I think I recall you're a tiny bit older than me in fact - cheeky monkey!

But, yes, I fancied the bloke in Follyfoot myself - it wasn't just the horses (well, I didn't actually fancy the horses - I think you know what I mean). And White Horses, yes - that was another of my favourites! In fact, I now have the title song going round and round in my head:
"On white horses, snowy white horses, let me ride away .. away .. away .."

And some others I forgot earlier (which I don't think have been mentioned yet?):
The Addams Family
The Munsters
Vision On/Take Hart
Animal Magic

I like this thread!

It was the clean-cut one for me, Mick!

Funny thing is, when I moved to Bradford I discovered that my aunt used to know him when he was a lad. He lived near her, and she always remembered him sitting on his garden wall combing his hair constantly!

Btw, I must've seen a repeat of The Owl Srvice - just checked, and it was first broadcast in 1969!

Ah, yes...from wikipedia:

"The serial was repeated in 1978, for the first time in colour. This resulted in Granada placing an endcap with a copyright date of 1978 which might have confused viewers who didn't realise it was actually produced nine years earlier."

Btw, does anyone remember a spooky kids' show from the 1970s that featured a pheonix emerging from a fire? That's all I have; can't remember much else. It was Owl Service-ish, I think. Maybe set in a boarding house?

Never mind what I used to watch...just play the theme song of the Moomins TV show for me now and I'm hooked. Favourite childhood book. Only have small dowload for laptop so can't play it at the moment. Sniff.

Huw, I mentioned 'Pogle's Wood' as it has almost mythical status in my subliminal memory for scaring the crap out of me as a young kid. The stop-frame animation was so basic but potent. I think it was the match-stick men, or whatever they were, that disturbed me most.

Anything Oliver Postgate & Peter Firmin turned their hands to was always touched by a faintly disturbing magic imo.

You know they rediscovered all the old lost films of 'Ivor The Engine', 'Pingwings' & 'The Seal Of Neptune' in October last year, buried in a pig-sty, and they are due for remastered DVD release, nearly 50 years after they were thought lost forever.

Check this out for a flavour: http://www.dragons-friendly-society.co.uk/pingdraft.htm

Nice one, Ally! That's it: The Pheonic and the Carpet. I used to love that show...couldn't recall it being a period piece, though.

'Jamie and the Magic Torch' was an obvious one for me back in the day as was 'Cloppa Castle' too (great theme tune). Later on I slipped into the likes of 'Thundercats' and 'Centurions' but as I've grown older I find myself pining for the earlier gentler shows, quite why I'm not exactly sure.

I remember seeing a wonderful stop frame animated version of 'Hansel and Gretel' on kids TV one Saturday morning in the early seventies which scared the crap out of me. It was one of those utterly magical but definitely creepy, possibly Czechoslovakian, films so popular at the time.

All the stop-frame I was able to find searching for "Hansel and Gretel animation".

I really enjoyed The Owl Service during a recent watch. I remember being shown the Beeb adaptation of Elidor in primary school, which really fired my imagination. Alan Garner is one of the most singular fantasy authors this country has ever produced as far as I'm concerned.

Codename: Icarus was another fine young teen drama. Children of the Stones was another goodie. Almost like Nigel Kneale for kids!

John - how could I have forgotten Children of the Stones. Wasn't it about Megalithic Stones, or is that my imagination playing games with my age?

Anyone remember Knights Of God? Written by Richard Cooper, who also did Codename: Icarus. The vastly underrated John Woodvine played the chief baddies, with Julian Fellowes as his henchman- plus Gareth 'Blake' Thomas and Patrick Troughton in one of his last screen roles. Never been repeated, but I loved it.

Yeah I remember 'Knights of God'. If memory serves me right it was made in 1985 but held back until 1987 during which time co-stars Patrick Troughton and Nigel Stock had sadly died.

Have the DVD of 'Children Of The Stones' and it still stands up remarkably well. I can't imagine anything quite as bleak and chilling being produced for children these days. Does anyone remember the ending? It is genuinely disturbing.

I do, Stevie! I'm about due for a rewatch, come to think of it. Perhaps after I've watched the Pogle's Wood DVDs that are on their way to me.

It's much talkier than I remember, and shockingly cheery at the end.
Three more I remember;
Batman - at any time the most exciting thing on telly.
Clapperboard - Fantastic. Home-made movies, interviews, clips. I still remember nearly wetting myself at that stunning first clip of Star Wars.
Screen Test - more films!

Hubert, were you aware that not only 'Pogle's Wood' but the notorious original, 'The Pogles' - which was banned by the BBC as being "too frightening" - have been released, in their remastered entirety, on DVD?!

That's what I'll be ordering next pay day.

Stevie, I've ordered all three of them: The Pogles, Pogle's Wood and Pogle's Choice! It the earliest show I remember watching on television, and I don't recall much about it, except I never missed an episode and my mum made us (my brother and I) Pippin and Tog puppets. There's also an interesting looking CD-ROM Pogles story available on the official website, featuring an apparently very scary witch!

Huw, I thought 'Pogle's Choice' was a "best of" selection of episodes from 'Pogle's Wood'. Which means you'll have all those episodes twice. Hope I'm wrong.

That looks fantastic, Tony, lol. There is something otherworldly about these old kids TV shows. They had this tacky, let's make do with what we've got, quality that relied on the strengths of narrative storytelling and vivid characters to produce something truly magical, that transcends time and fashion imo.

Another one I can't believe I forgot to mention is the original 'The Magic Roundabout' and the weird-as-feck movie 'Dougal And The Blue Cat'. NOT the bloody awful reboot of a few years back...
