Alas! But his work remains.

Indeed it does. A fine body of work it is. Though it was through the Twilight Zone when I was but a nipper that I first got to know him. Thank God for the genre (:

I remember him first in "633 Squadron" which I saw with my dad when I was a kid. The other film on the programme was the original and real version of "The Italian Job"

Cheers

Finally getting a chance to pay tribute to this great actor, one of the more solidly dependable and likeable faces of my youth. Even the most routine of war movies or thrillers were made memorable by his quietly charismatic presence, while occasional meatier roles, like 'Charly' or 'Obsession', showed what he was capable of as a serious actor. These are the roles I'll always remember him for:

'Picnic' (1955)
'Autumn Leaves' (1956)
'The Naked And The Dead' (1958)
'Battle Of The Coral Sea' (1959)
'Underworld USA' (1961)
The Twilight Zone episodes; "A Hundred Yards Over The Rim" & "The Dummy" (1961-62)
The Outer Limits episode; "The Galaxy Being" (1963)
'PT 109' (1963)
'633 Squadron' (1964)
'The Best Man' (1964)
'Masquerade' (1965)
'Charly' (1968)
'The Devil's Brigade' (1968)
'Too Late The Hero' (1970) - I always wanted it to be him who stood up at the end...
'The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid' (1972)
'Three Days Of The Condor' (1975)
'Midway' (1976)
'Obsession' (1976)
...and innumerable other TV appearances in the 60s/70s.

It was an inspired bit of casting to resurrect his film career, albeit briefly, as Peter Parker's brutally slain old uncle in Sam Raimi's 'Spiderman' - and one of the unconscious reasons I warmed to that adaptation virtually from the beginning.

RIP Cliff...
