Dear All

While helping a friend clear out her parents' effects, recently, I stumbled on a tatty old pre-war tome called "The Monster Book for Girls". It was adorned with pictures of jolly school lasses wielding hockey sticks and was full of ďthrilling adventure stories for girlsĒ. I loved the title so much Iíve stolen it for a new Exaggerated Press anthology.

First it is not a book for teenagers or children.

What Iím looking for are stories inspired by the title, whatever (within the realms of decency, the title does, Iím afraid lend itself to a bit of nudge-nudge, wink-wink- sordidness) springs to mind and kick-starts the creative engine.

It doesnít even have to be of the horror/fantastical genre. What is a monster anyway? Slipstream, thriller, romance, a mixture of genres would be interesting, whatever floats your (and my, of course) boat

Be warned; I donít want (or like) teenage vampires, vampire angst or zombies or any other over-their-sell-by-date beasts. High-ish fantasy might be okay as long as it is original and features no grumpy dwarves or ethereal elves. Please donít hurt children or gratuitously torture women (or men come to that).

Length: 3,500 words max, but I will negotiate if absolutely necessary. Submission deadline: 27th February 2011.

Submit as an RTF attachment to mbfg@hotmail.co.uk

Regards
Terry Grimwood

Hello Gary

I'm currently reading "Rain Dogs" and what a fine tome it is. I'm all but halfway through, propping it up at the breakfast table and making myself late for work then keeping myself awake at night with it. Do you like the Tom Waits album of the same name by the way?

Hi, Terry, and welcome.
What age group are these stories to be aimed at?

'Rain Dogs' is a brilliant album! Haven't read the book, yet...

Hey, Terry - how kind. Much appreciated, mate. The title of the novel is a direct reference to Waits' amazing album (as is the little description of a Rain Dog at the start of the book).

Stevie - if you'd like a copy, let me know. The publisher went under and I managed to get all the remaining stock. You'll pay a fortune elsewhere, but I can do you a good deal.

Send me an email on "my first initial & surname followed by the numbers 1, 2 and 3 @hotmail.com" - see, I'm learning.

Can't guarantee I'll read it straight away, Zed, but would be nice to have in the TBR pile.

Thanks for the welcomes. Makes me feel nice.

Steve Walsh, the book is aimed at an adult audience, no, not that sort of adult, that's my story in "Blind Swimmer". By adult I mean grown-ups. Hope that helps.

And yes, Gery Mc is a fine, unflinching author and we all know him!

Oh, that's good news! The one I'd like to send you for it is 4700 words but there's no way I can chop out 1/4 of it. So maybe I'll send that along and if you don't like it I've got time to write something else? (She said hopefully)

If Kate claims to have a story that's 4,700 words, but posts that statement twice, does that mean her tale will be 9,400 words long and be automagically rejected?

Mbfg
- I'm done! Am sending it to you today. In a mo, in fact.
I have to say I got a lot of help with this from Stevie. I agonised over my ending and asked him to have a look at it. His criticism was 100% justified in that my ending was rushed and unsubtle. I've changed it - and shortened it, but now fear it's still too long and also not particularly monstrous...
:-(
Stevie - I have to take this chance to thank you, and praise your insight. It's helped me in ways I think will keep on doing so, particularly in making me stick to what a story wants to be, not what I want it to. In fact, you and Mark helped me enormously with my sub to Des's antho. I couldn't have done it without you.
Grief- this sounds like an Oscar speech...

OK, to bring it back on topic, can those of us who didn't make the cut see the TOC soon? I'm looking forward to this book - even though I got a sweet little rejection from our mate Terry.

Unfortunately it was Englebert Alkrington Poe - a lesser known purveyor of Victorian pornography, not the famous Poe...

So that had to be rejected as well

Aww, you're both just trying to make me feel better. But there's no need - I don't feel bad. I collect rejections. In fact, that's the second time that particular story has been rejected in one form or another (the first rejection was from Charles Black). It might be third time lucky, you never know (or I might just chuck it in the bin instead).

Seriously, when can we ordinary mortals get to see the TOC please, Terry?

Okay Caroline, as you asked so nicely.

The problem with Stepehn King was that he misread 3,500 words as 3,500,000.

Anyway, TOC...

Hope that explains it.

I went looking through there and Duotrope trying to find markets for it. It's too long for a lot of them and not specific enough a zombie story for others... There's one place just wants zombie stories with an LGBT theme.

Anyway, I did send it to someone and I'm waiting to hear back... Just on the lookout for alternatives.

Just when you thought it was safe to get back into the message board, "The Monster Book for Girls" is almost upon us.

I have received Steve Upham's fantastic cover art (don't know how to post it here without creating another giant image) and very soon the book itself will be available.

Some would say bringing it out just before Christmas is a cynical marketing ploy.

And they would be dead right.

Your Christmas shopping worries solved by The Exaggerated Press (http://exaggeratedpress.weebly.com/) who only have your interests at heart.

Cheers
Terry

I haven't priced it yet but the initial edition will be a paperback at the usual sort of paperback price.

I would like to bring out a hardback as well, they usually go for around £20.

Jon Courtney Grimwood asked me to sign the copy of "The Exaggerated Man" that he bought simply because we have the same surname. Not a common name, and centred around Ipswich. Perhaps we're related, cousins 10,000 times removed.
