Joe Hill is touring the UK again with his new book NOS 4R2

Dates in the link above. He's a really nice guy and very funny when he gives his talks.

I'm going to the Manchester signing. He's only doing a signing there, not a talk. He's doing the talk in Liverpool but I can't get there.

Anyone else going to the Manchester one? Perhaps we could meet up?

Do you want to swap mobile nos. and meet up? I guess they have a coffee shop in there or something? I'm a harmless old lady - honest I am - so you'll be perfectly safe with me.

Drop me an email or message on FB if you like.

What I'd like to ask Joe Hill is how important his namesake is to him as an inspiration. People talk all the time about his father's influence on him, but it's rarely mentioned that Hill's writing name is that of a radical trade unionist who was executed on false charges – partly because he encouraged miners to believe in their rights, partly because he wrote a song about the collusion of American preachers with capitalist exploitation – Hill coined the phrase "pie in the sky". Hill's final message to his comrades before his judicial murder was "Don't mourn, organise." The clearest example of his name being relevant to 'our' Joe Hill's work, I think, is the latter's short story 'Thumbprint', whose theme is a deeply uncomfortable one for the American right.

And when my copy of NOS 4A2 showed up in the post, it wasn't the hardback I thought I'd ordered, but a large print paperback - which I have returned. I don't pay £17 for a paperback ever. I've now had to order the US edition direct from Amazon.com and the expected delivery date isn't till 3rd of June.

I hope it gets here sooner so I've got something for him to sign.

I was going to buy it on the day. Maybe see you there, Weber? (Manchester, if that's the one you're going to)

I'm surprised, Weber, given Amazon's reputation for honest trading.
