Anyone want a read? I switched off my internet router to avoid temptation and 3 hours later I'd knocked out a pretty decent 4000 word story that's been wandering about my skull for a while. It's still in draft stage at the moment but comments would be appreciated. | ||

You've inspired me now, Weber. There's a story I did a while ago which I've been thinking of sending off somewhere recently. Just did a few tweaks to it again and now it's gone. This seems to be the case - there is so much to constantly distract us as it is, take us away - look how long it took me to get back here and respond to you! But maybe we are like those peripatetic characters in all those "on the road" stories and novels through the centuries? Meeting up with strangers that become companions for a time along the way; then vanish as we part, and fate takes them, or as they seek their own fortunes elsewhere. FB, etc., just gave us the illusion of lasting, meaningful connections created swiftly, painlessly... but really, it's just one more typical iteration of an "on the road" story, replete with its stock of poignant relationships. | ||

It struck me, looking back on my old friendships, that we were kind of like commodities in the night, like beers, something to ease our way through life. Is that harsh? Is it right? I remember fun times, nice times, laughs... but last night me and my son's friend watched Seinfeld and laughed til we couldn't breath, and I hardly know him. We're not exactly friends but it was a great time. Do "times" matter more than bonds? Does it even matter? | ||

This is so sad. I heard in a podcast on time this week (The Quantum Mechanics) that times is "kisses not stones" - ie "things" are just events that just happen more slowly than others. Driving around a flat area of Skye last year we saw a huge round boulder, how it got there so mysterious. Where did it come from? Why that boulder? What stopped it and when? It endured but felt...lonely, I guess. Now I remember it perhaps more than the mountains. |
