SPOILER ALERT Hi Ally. Not seen the second part yet, just the first. Oh no! I can't believe... SPOILER ALERT They killed off Adam Carter! Shit! Still, that's always been the way. And I actually like the fact that this is a series that's not afraid to axe major characters, often in a brutal way. That said, I don't think Adam's death really had the impact that it should've, at least for me. Maybe I'm a bit inured to it. Or maybe part of me keeps thinking we haven't seen the body, so he might still be alive. That's the trouble with a series as twisty as this- you end up not trusting the information you're given... The new guy looks interesting... but can he be trusted? Of course he can be ultimately, IF Adam's really dead- they'll need a hunk of beefcake to replace Rupert Penry-Jones. But if Adam's death was faked for whatever reason..? Nice to see Hermione Norris back as Ros too. Peter Firth as excellent as ever. And Miranda Raison... sorry. I have a thing for women with short blonde hair. Probably I need help  | ||

Guy of Gisborne in the BBC version. Bloody good actor, I think. And yes, if I was that way inclined, I definitely would. But being who I am, it's Miranda Raison for me... (sigh) Or Hermione Norris. Or both.  Ahem. I'll get me coat. | ||

Ah - now I remember Guy of Gisborne. Very accomplished actor. It was Heather's birthday so I had a bottle of wine and am a bit hazy on what happened in the second episode. | ||

Damn it, I shouldn't have opened this thread! I was skimming through it, trying to figure out if it was the same Spooks I'd just finished watching on DVD (the sixth series), and I saw what Simon wrote at the same time I noticed the spolier warning. That's the last time I look in a thread about a film or TV series I've not yet seen! | ||

Just watched episode 2. SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT READ BELOW THIS LINE IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED EPISODE TWO YET!!! PLEASE! I DON'T WANT THAT ON MY CONSCIENCE! Loved it. Richard Armitage as Lucas is excellent, although he's still got his work cut out filling Adam's shoes. Hermione Norris was brilliant as well. I remember one reviewer calling Ros an 'asp in designer shoes'- which I rather like, but this episode gave the character much more depth. The way she maintained the ice-maiden mien, hiding any outward sign of her grief and rage- before unleashing both in her hotel room by trashing it- gave us both sides of the character at once. And some great lines ('Congratulations- your testicles are yours to take home with you' being a particular classic) Miranda Raison was underused in this episode I thought, especially given the tenderness between her and Adam in episode 1. I wanted to know more about what she was going through and how she was dealing with it. Still, looks like she'll have more to do next week. And Peter Firth. My god, he is one bloody good actor. His face at the end... and a great ending it was. There's a very Old Testament streak in me that wants to see unequivocal bastards (Blair, Bush, Bin Laden, Donald 'the left hand of darkness' Rumsfeld) well and truly get what they deserve. And just when I was almost resigned to the 'realpolitik' ending (i.e. Kachimov getting a comfy 'retirement') Harry did for him. But as that last look at his face showed, revenge never cleans the grief away. Just leaves one more stain on the soul. | ||

It was good stuff wasn't it Simon? Surprising too in that one would have expected Kachimov to linger throughout the series rather than be dispatched so swiftly. Hermione Norris is wonderful. It's fun too to note that she is filling Adam Carter's shoes rather than Richard Armitage. Her projected coldness is refreshing too, though I wondered if it would occur to her that had she not delayed Adam he would have survived the explosion. | ||

Yes, they seemed to be setting Kachimov up as an arch-enemy for some time to come. Be interesting to see how Harry's going to handle developments. He's lost people before but Adam's death seems to have hit him in a way previous losses haven't. The logic of the job dictated Kachimov be kept alive and squeezed for information, whatever anyone's personal feelings; instead Harry let personal vengeance take over, which is pretty rare for him. If something happens later that Kachimov's information could have prevented, he'll never forgive himself. Ros only held Adam up for ten seconds, but they would've made all the difference. If it hasn't occurred to her now, it will. It'll be nice reversal of the usual dynamic- the hunky bloke pin-up won't be the section head this time, he'll be taking orders from Ros. And Ros is utterly ruthless, as well. Adam could make tough decisions, but they were always tempered with his humanity. Ros... well, I'd hate to be stranded on a deserted island with her and a limited food supply. | ||

Ros will probably have a flashback eventually and come close to losing it again. Steely she is but that scene where she trashed the room spoke volumes. Hard exterior and all that going on underneath - wonderful. Reminds me of a friend who I said looked like a swan gliding over the water. She reminded me that swans paddle like fuck beneath. | ||

Just rewatched the episode on iPlayer- hadn't realised Kachimov was played by Stuart Wilson. Now there's another damn good actor. Some actors are so good you don't recognise them, because they disappear so completely into the role they play. Yes, the hotel room scene was excellent- especially the ending of it. After that explosion, she composed herself again within seconds, controlling the rage and channelling it. There's the scene in the car with Kaplan too... 'People die... everyone you've ever met, everyone you ever will. They all die.' But the look in her eyes when she stared out of the window- again, that said it all. | ||

I had a dream a good few years ago about the Men From Uncle being holed up in a tiny wooden shed-like building, being shot at from all round. They were going to die, not escape. It was so awful and upsetting. Looks like they made a series of it. | ||

I dreamt I was living down this lovely back street, surrounded by wild bushes. And the houses felt like small churches...and one day some dustman left an old fashioned sports car on the pavement. But it was ok, because my dad knew about it. Not mind blowing, but my dreams seem so thin now. And I seem to dream during the day, for momentary...moments. I don't watch SPOOKS. | ||

Just saw the final episode. WOW. Brilliant performances all round (espeically Gemma Jones as Connie) and tension you could've cracked nuts on. And lots of rather nifty Sisters Of Mercy references. 2,5,0,0,2,5; Finland Red, Egypt White; 'what's been lost can never be found'... and, of course, Rain From Heaven. A nice little extra. | ||

Agreed Simon and an incredible performance by Gemma Jones. That last scene involving her was quite powerful. Now we'll have to wait ages for another series. I also watched The History of Violence for the first time last night and greatly admired the performance given by Viggo Mortensen too. Two great performances on on evening! |
