BBC showed this black and white horror film last week. It was made in 1961 by Hammer. I'm embarrassed to say I'd never heard of it, yet alone seen it, so I watched it for the first time and I thought it was absolutely brilliant. The small cast was excellent, there was a menacing atmosphere to the film, and there were a few frightening scenes that impressed me greatly. The ending was a little hokey, but overall I rated the film very highly. If you've not seen it (it was also known as Taste of Fear) then I'd recommend you check it out. |

It's a very good little film - I've seen it a few times over the years, but was lucky enough to get in to a showing at the NFT earlier this year when Jimmy Sangster was interviewed there. |

Alas, Seth Holt! A great loss when he could direct as well as he did there. There's a hint of Lewton in some scenes, I think. The film is available on the latest Region 1 Hammer set for anyone who missed it. |

Four of the lesser seen movies there -- in the UK it's often the usual culprits reissued time and again -- but I would hope they've made a mistake with the ratio being listed as Fullscreen. |

Mind you, my copy of Scream of Fear is not only fullscreen but recorded off the telly, crackly and distorted, anything's an improvement. |

I bought that Hammer set a few weeks ago. I've only watched The Gorgon so far, but I thought the trailer for Scream of Fear was promising. |

Fullscreen's a mistake, Guy - that is, the films are in the right ratios. |

...and it was broadcast with the correct ratio too, or at least it was a year back when they last showed it (and I recorded it on my magic pvr box thingy). |

Mick - how do you burn stuff recorded off the telly on hard drive to disc? These recordings are clearer than dvds, I've found. |

Tony - I have a pvr that has a USB port on the rear so I can dump the stuff off to a PC, tidy it up then burn to a DVD. To my knowledge there are only a couple of Freeview PVRs that do that - the one I have, a Topfield 5800 (and it's successor, the 5810) and the Humax 9200. Picture quality varies - stuff off BBC1 & BBC2 can be pretty good; stuff from the lower bitrate channels (E4 and the like) can be only so-so. To be honest, my experience is that a DVD release is usually better if it's available. |

That may be for firmware updates. I presume it's the "BT Vision" box? If so, trawling around a bit found this:- "The BT Vision V-box has two USB sockets - one on the front and one at the back. We're not aware of any device or application that makes use of these sockets yet, and it doesn't seem possible to use USB to connect a PC or Mac to the V-box to extract recorded video from the box's drive." |
