By gum, that's one spooky, spooky film... This weekend I have had the absolute pleasure of watching Dreyer's acknowledged masterpiece and the Russian film VIY. Both of these are scarier than most recent horror films I can think of. |

The new Criterion edition of VAMPYR is wonderful. Is that the one you have, Gary? I love VIY - I've been introducing it to as many people as possible over the last six years or so. I heard there's a new version (also Russian). Gogol's original novella was also the inspiration for Bava's BLACK SUNDAY. |

It's the nee restoration, Huw. A screener, without a case, so I'm not sure if it's Criterion. I bought VIY on your recommendation, mate - thanks for that! It's a wonderful film. |

Viy is one of my favourite short stories Huw- hands down. Never seen the film! There is apparently also a quite recent Russian television series of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita which I must see! |

I see there are two new versions of VAMPYR on DVD - the Criterion Region one in the US & the Eureka Region Two in the UK. For anyone who's interested here are the differences in the extras: Criterion: Special Features - SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE-DISC SET FEATURES: - The original German version in a new high-definition digital transfer from the 1998 restoration by Martin Koerber and the Cineteca di Bologna - Newly credited alternate version with English text - Audio commentary featuring film scholar Tony Rayns - Carl Th. Dreyer (1966), a documentary by Jørgen Roos chronicling Dreyer's career - Visual essay by scholar Casper Tybjerg on Dreyer's influences in creating Vampyr - Radio broadcast from 1958 of Dreyer reading an essay about filmmaking - New and improved English subtitle translation - PLUS: A booklet featuring new essays by Mark Le Fanu and Kim Newman, Koerber on the restoration, and a 1964 interview with producer and star Nicolas de Gunzburg, as well as a book featuring Dreyer and Christen Jul's original screenplay and Sheridan Le Fanu 1872 story "Carmilla," a source for the film Eureka: ----SPECIAL FEATURES----* New, high-definition transfer of the Martin Koerber / Cineteca di Bologna film restoration in its original aspect ratio (1.19:1) *New and improved English subtitle translation *Full-length audio commentary featuring film scholar Tony Rayns *Full-length audio commentary featuring Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro talking about one of his favourite films. *Two deleted scenes, removed by the German censor in 1932. *Carl Th. Dreyer (1966) a documentary by Jörgen Roos *Visual essay by scholar Casper Tybjerg on Dreyer's Vampyr influences *The Baron a short MoC documentary about Baron Nicolas de Gunzberg *Inspiration for the film - Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla - as an on-disc pdf. * 80-page book featuring rare production stills, a facsimile reproduction of the 1932 Danish film programme, writing by Tom Milne (The Cinema of Carl Dreyer), Jean and Dale Drum (My Only Great Passion: The Life and Films of Carl Th. Dreyer), and Martin Koerber (film restorer). Looks as if the Eureka region 2 has a bit more but misses off the radio broadcast of Dreyer's essay. |

I just received the Criterion edition the other day, but seeing as it's one of my all-time favourite films, I'm going to get the Eureka edition as well, if only for the Del Toro commentary. The Criterion edition is lovely, by the way. I can't afford to buy everything they release (or even half of it) but when they do something like VAMPYR (or MISHIMA, which came out a couple of weeks ago), I can't resist! Karim, you must see the film version of VIY! It's really very good. The effects are dated but charming, and the whole film has a dreamlike, fairytale quality about it. There is a new version being filmed right now in Russia, directed by Oleg Stepchenko. According to the IMDB it'll be out some time next year. |
