Oh my God. I'm still a bit shakey. Again, wobbly, again clagged-on gum effects, again lighting that looks like it was done by some bloke with no knowledge of lighting whatsoever. But my Lord, if this wasn't one of the most affecting films I've seen in my entire life. Not so much because it was horrifying but because it was so damned tragic. Is that not one of the most humanly real final images ever, in any film? It felt like the scream of anyone who ever lived, felt their hearts torn apart by mere living. I'm rambling because I'm still a bit wobbly. This film has made me realise what film is, what creativity is. It's not sets or money or skill, but feeling. Those other things count, certainly, and can be worth a lot, but feeling, captured truly and clearly, counts for everything, is the bottom line. Capture that and your work will resound through time. Also, it was incredibly erotic, and the endless shots of extras looking slap bang into the camera every sinlge time only made it curiously more real... strange, isn't it? Oh, I loved this film, and I love Rollin now. |

I'll just echo what my dear friend Zed has said above. There's no looking back for you now Tony - you're going to discover the most wonderful resonances in things other people might deem rubbish |

Tony, have you ever seen ZEDER: VOICES OF BEYOND? It's an incredibly (and oddly) moving horror film, with an amazing final image. One of my favourites. |

I've never even heard of this one, Zed. Is it one of Rollin's? |

No, it's by Pupi Avati: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086636/ Vert tough to get hold of, but worth the struggle. |

I just watched The House With Laughing Windows today, Zed - so if it's anything like that one I'll probably like it. |

I thought it was brilliant and extremely unsettling. The voice on the tape (My colours, running through my veins... I'm dying...) was seriously creepy. Lots of atmosphere and dread. Loved it! |

I find Rollin a bit hit or miss, but I like these two Pupi Avati films very much. Another obscure(ish) European film I like is Sergio Martino's film All the Colours of the Dark. Also, and I think I mentioned these before on the old board, but Giorgio Ferroni's films The Mill of the Stone Women and The Night of the Devils are well worth a look for fellow Euro-horror fans. Mill is available on DVD but I don't think Night of the Devils has been released on disc yet. It is similar to the last and longest story in Mario Bava's brilliant Black Sabbath, in that it's based on the Alexei Tolstoy story about the 'wurdulak' from Balkan folklore. All are well worth hunting down. |

Zed - what's your take on the very last scene of Laughing Windows, when the credits are rolling? There's the laughter and then we cut to an exterior shot of the church where a hand appears on the right, leaning against a tree. Any idea? |

I've only seen 'Shiver Of The Vampires' (twice) by Jean Rollin and still can't decide whether it's great or rubbish. The two lesbian vampires weren't half hot though - especially the cute curvaceous blonde! Does that count as an informed film critique? |

Weber: no comma , tells you it's the "to." How's the coffee today? (I can't muster the energy to care about THE LIVING DEAD GIRL, but I think it's only because of that title, which does nothing for me.) |

Be warned; there is a lot of rubbish in it, but at heart it's got so many things unaddressed by much current horror, even by Romero, that it feels fresh. |
