Sarah Waters's ghost story THE LITTLE STRANGER, which received a lot of popular coverage on its release that'd make you think it's the first ghost story written since Kingsley Amis's THE GREEN MAN, is on the shortlist for the Man Booker Prize.

Should we sigh or rejoice? Even if it had Ramsey's name on the cover, I doubt it'd be there if the author were considered a genre writer . . .

Remember, King would the National Book Foundation award. That's some achievement. Which is why the usual snobs flailed uselessly when they heard. Me, made me smile from ear to ear.

This is true. Ray Bradbury got one too, I believe. But they're usually lifetime achievement oh-you're-all-right-after-all awards. Though King did get an O. Henry.

Maybe it's just me, but I sometimes get the feeling that horror writers are more appreciated for their contribution to literature in the States than they are in this country. As for movies, I'm not so sure. As Carpenter once said, 'in France I'm an auteur, in Germany I'm a horror director, and in Britain I'm a film-maker...in America I'm a piece of shit.' I'm paraphrasing from mind again.
