I am a fairly recent convert to Joel Lane's work. I picked up 'The Witnesses Are Gone' at Fcon and read the first two chapters today...Only a small amount of pages, but goddam, Joel is good real GOOD, I can't wait to read more sorta good. I love his style...So bleak yet he can slip in a moment so funny & touching in a soft & slightly sly way...I noticed this in his reading from the book last year, and again this year. I think he may well be a genius. gcw |

He is. IMHo, there are only two real genuis;s working in the field: Ramsey and Joel. And that isn't me being sychophantic (for anyone lurking), it's simply my opinion. |

Indeed it should, Stephen! Witnesses... is my favourite of Joel's books so far, although The Lost District is right there behind it. Plus, I've still got his Ex Occidente collection to read. |

Do so, Stephen, you won't regret it! Joel is disgracefully talented and a lovely bloke to boot. gc |

TWAG is probably the best novella I've read this year. It perfectly captures and expands on the themes that are apparent in a lot of Joel's fiction. Like Gary, I'm wary of sounding sycophantic, but I don't think there's any other writer who blends such readable unpretentious prose with the literary expertese that Joel does. The appeal is there on many levels. |

Mario Guslandi has done a review via The Agony Column for Witnesses today- thought I'd link it here if there are still any doubters: http://www.bookotron.com/agony/reviews/2009/lane-the_witnesses_are_gone.htm ok so there is one part I don't agree with...more booze I say. |

It may be crass to bask in praise, but it's probably more crass to ignore it. Thanks for your comments, comrades. I want people who enjoy a story of mine to take away two things: love for the weird fiction genre and some empathy with where I'm at personally and/or politically. I thought people would attack 'Witnesses' for its politics. So far no-one has. This is heartening. Mario's review is so amazing I may increase his wages. For the rest of you, I assume the blow jobs were satisfactory. |

See waking up on a saturday morning at 7 am with a nice cup of java and reading a post from Joel containing a big smiley is just nice... :-) I was wondering...cough-cough, you know, since the review was posted, that maybe, I could maybe have another one... |
