Only Blu-ray? That's a pity. I've never seen this film, but it looks like one I would like. |

Why would you be 'proud to present' something in a format that is still only available to a minority of consumers? |

I thought Blu-rays played in dvd players, but you just got none of the extra special doo-hickeys of Blu-ray, so that was the whole point against it: why spend more on buying/renting Blu-ray, when you got nothing extra for the experience?... Well, if I'm right (probably not, I do think though), then finally, here, there might be a reason to.... |

Blu ray can be amazing! You want to pause every frame just to drool over them - it's like you can suddenly see after years of only thinking you could. But the quality varies; pretty good on Mallick's The New World, ASTOUNDING on 2001 a Space Odyssey. Really, when it looks that good there's no going back. |

But don't you need then a good TV to go with it, Tony? A certain kind? I stand corrected, Weber.... |

Um, yes - an hdtv. We just had to upgrade and there were no other sort, then had to buy the blu ray player because the dvds looked AWFUL on it. |

ASTOUNDING on 2001 a Space Odyssey Is that annoying intermission still there, I mean in the blu ray version? |

then had to buy the blu ray player because the dvds looked AWFUL on it. Actually a DVD can look pretty good on a nice high res TV, as long as you it can connect using an HDMI digital cable. The dvd image over analog cables will look bad. Most modern dvd players will have a HDMI connection, but if you have an old one then you unfortunately need to buy a new one and then indeed you can just as well immediately spend yet a bit more for a blue ray player. I do see the superiority of HD over very watchable DVD, but 720p is already very good. 1080p brings a bit extra for high-end images like the ones in Avatar, but for most movies it doesn't matter. I have so far refrained from buying a blue ray player, because the discs are pretty expensive, and also because I believe the future is for pay per download movies - I already have so much "stuff" around that the idea of removing the physical aspect of my music and dvds is very attractive - a simplification. |
