Not to be a kiss arse, but that would be Dark Feasts. It's the first one that always springs to mind when asked this question. Perhaps Red Dreams by Dennis Etchinson would tie with it. | ||

I've been collecting the 'Best New Horror' volumes for several years without actually reading any of them yet. My plan is to get stuck into them once I've completed all the Pan, Fontana & Star anthologies. Meanwhile Joel's 'The Earth Wire And Other Stories' is turning into a cracking 90s collection. Weird fiction with a compassionate political agenda, though subtly put across and not overly preachy, thank heavens. | ||

I'm currently reading a very intresting antho called The Dark Descent 1: The Colour Of Evil, edited by David G Hartwell. It contains an excellent 12 page introduction on the development of the short story form into novel form, and contains such classics as Harlan Ellison's seminal, 'The Whimper Of Whipped Dogs', Shirley Jackson's masterpiece 'The Summer People', Fritz Leiber's 'Belsen Express' (have yet to read it), Charles L Grant's 'If Damon Comes', Stephen King's beautiful 'The Reach', among many others. It's an astonishing gathering of talent, with other luminaries such as Russell Kirk, Lovecraft, Hawthorne, Bradbury, Bloch, Wellman Collier. This British version is different from the single volume published in the States. I believe the States version contains one of Ramsey's stories, but I'm not sure. | ||

Anthos: The best really are the most well-known ones: PRIME EVIL and CUTTING EDGE, and Ramsey's two (in the States titled) NEW TERRORS 1 & 2, and any DAW YEAR'S BEST HORROR from those years. And what the hell, DARK FORCES, even though it straddles the 70's/80's. (666 is pretty good too.) | ||

Frank, the American version contain's Ramsey's 'Mackintosh Willy'. Great tale. I'd go along with all those mentioned so far. I also greatly enjoy King's SKELETON CREW, Joe Lansdale's BESTSELLERS GUARANTEED, and Skipp & Spector's DEADLINES (a collection cleverly disguised as a novel). | ||

'The Summer People' is one of my favourite ever short stories, Lincoln...and, yes, The Dark Descent is a classic anthology. Can't believe I forgot about it. Post Mortem (ed. Paul F. Olsen) is also a personal favourite. |
