In-famous "Battle Royale" DVD is impossible to find in Italy, beside having never been shown in theatres. A moral shroud seems to have been spread over it. Some bootleg copies are at hand but by general comment they are such bad quality one can only mourn the original movie. Is that movie really that shocking, beside quite good? |

It isn't really that shocking, Giancarlo - very cartoonish, and funny (which might be the problem - the tone?). I think it's a very good film. The sequel is less good, but still worth tracking down. |

Can you not import a Region 2 DVD, Giancarlo? |

'Battle Royale' is a pure joy from start to finish and one of my fav genre films of recent times. Haven't seen the sequel and been warned to avoid at all costs. Surely it can't be that bad! |

No, it isn't. It's pretty good - just nowhere near as good as the first film. |

I love Battle Royale. I'm surprised it's taken seriously enough to be controversial. The sequel is perfectly entertaining, and only disappointing if you expect the heights of the first. So just don't. |

BR is one of my favourite movies ever (I also love Ballard's Running Wild, which seems to me to be it's literary opposite). The sequel is a disappointing on first watch, but is actually a perfectly serviceable thriller (which takes a interesting stance on what constitutes terrorists and terrorism but doesn't really follow through or have the courage of its convictions). The book of BR is also a fine read, and the 12 volume manga is surprisingly impressive (it flags a little in later volumes, but manages to get itself together to have a fine climax). Yes, I am that nerdy. S |

That's some great nerdism there, though. BR is a worthy subject of obsession. |

Thanks, everyone! On further search, it seems there are foreign editions available for order from my country. I'll go for these. By the way, I've just seen, as shown at movie theatres, the Thai horrors "Coming Soon" and "Alone". The former I've found good for creeps, the latter more psychologically intense. No masterpiece there but nice blood-freeze moments. Anybody about these two? |

I've seen them, Giancarlo. They show the latest Thai horror films at the cinema here all the time. I liked Alone quite a lot (it's by the directors of Shutter). I thought it had some nice touches, such as the footsteps on the beach. |

And I just managed to get my directors cut of BR back from a mate, so I can watch it again soon! Huw, joint watch?? S |

Thai horror can be pretty good. I did like Shutter and I now realize that I have Alone in the dvd pile, but I didn't yet get around to see it. In my limited experience, South Korea seems to excel at intense thrillers, but except for The Host I can't immediately recall a Korean horror movie. Huw: any recommendations? |

Tom, I'd recommend: A Tale of Two Sisters Hansel and Gretel Spider Forest The Uninvited Antarctic Journal Into the Mirror Acacia I expect you've seen most/all of those already. I'm sure there are more but I'm too dopey to think of anything now (I've just taken my nightly medicine). Not horror, strictly speaking, but there's always the excellent Memories of Murder (I expect you've seen that), The Quiet Family,Tell Me Something, Save the Green Planet, Memento Mori... |

Hi Huw, Thanks for the recommendations. I've seen and appreciated: Tale of 2 sisters; Spider forest, Memories of Murder, Save the green planet; memento mori. I have somewhere in the pile, but not yet seen: Hansel and Gretel, Antarctic Mirror. I will check the other titles ! |

I saw some of them. The problem in Italy is such movies come out as sneak performances I have to ferret out by closely looking into newspapers' theatre pages, or check up on the net. No announcements, no posters, no locandinas, no TV trailers. Makes me feel I am a pornographer! |

Huw - no to having watched Thirst, so we need to sort that as well. I also note with disappointment that there are films in that list that you've NOT sent me! You're slipping, man! :-) S |

'Acacia' is a good show, in fact probably the best "evil tree" movie I've seen, but haven't watched any of the rest of them. |

Antarctic Journal is a film I really want to see, but it doesn't seem to be avilable anywhere on DVD. Any clues where I might find a copy? |

Zed, you're not alone in enjoying Battle Royale 2. It takes itself a bit to seriously, and the social commentary is a bit cack-handed. But the first hour in particular is a lot of fun. Nowhere near as entertaining as the original, of course. |
