I have an antient Hodgson tome ("The House on the Borderland", Holden & Hardingham 1921, the hard to find 'cheap' edition which is actually more expensive than the 1908 first edition) in amazingly good condition and was willing to sell it, but alas not a single bookseller was interested. Odd, for it could easily make them a small fortune. I wonder: what do booksellers pay in the first place when they acquire books like that?

I think it depends, but certainly in the case of Andy Richards, he's always offered half the going rate if you want cash, or a fair bit more if he sells 'on consignment', ie you get the money when he sells the book(s), or if you want other books in exchange.
As for later issues being worth more, I think all the Ash Tree editions of Wakefield's stories are worth more now than the original volumes, which is a bit daft.

I think I have all of those Wakefields, in pristine condition, too. I keep them in the box they were originally sent in, believe it or not.

Btw, is there anything one can do against encroaching brittleness - I was thinking along the lines of humidity and temperature?

Hubert, we've discussed the problems of the Earth climate. Relocate to Yuggoth, it's the only way. But it may be difficult to take the books with you.

My personality and cognitive abilities encased in a shiny new cilinder - yes, I'm fairly tempted, even if it means I may have to go the Kindle way if I want to keep reading.

We may all go the kindle way if Wilmarth keeps interfering. But don't worry, I've dealt with him. He's out of his face these days.

Bitten by the bug, was he? We'll have to lend him a hand or two, then.
