I've just reviewed a new visionary story by Mark Samuels - i.e. THE TOWER, the extra story in the Chomu 'Man of the Machen' book or as they call it: "The Man Who Collected Machen" :-)
Anyone else read it?

No Des, but I'll be getting to it shortly as I've just started this - did you like the rest of the book? I've read the first three stories & I think they are truly masterful and in the case of the title story, actually very touching. I think Mark's a superb horror writer and that he's put a lot of himself into these stories & it shows.

I've always loved his stuff anyway and it was a delight for Kate (or The Bride of Probert as he referred to her at one point as we were discussing surgical experiments a la The Great God Pan ) & I to catch up with him at the FOAM meeting recently and have a jolly chat about the Nazi Cat women of Sarban and other weird things

yes, John, I do like the rest of the book very much, but I reviewed those stories last June when they were first published. It is now good to see a lovely affordable edition as well as a specialist luxury one.

I know - all power to Chomu Press! The Ex Occ version sold out before I could get it.

Thanks for the reminder, chaps - I tried unsuccessfully to buy the Ex Occidente version, but now have the Chomu Press version winging its way to me.

I'm halfway through the Ex Occ edition, and as usual with Mark's work it's heady, chilling and very well written stuff. I'll probably buy the Chomu edition as well, just to have the extra story.

I have the Chomu edition, although I still have Glyptotech to read before starting on it. Very much enjoy Mark's work. He has a very singular, intense vision which he conveys economically and with great intelligence.

I read Glyphotech just before starting on the latest one. It's also an excellent book - there's not a bad story in it.

GLYPHOTECH - accidentally - was the very first DFL-style Real-Time Review I did (on Shocklines in 2008, later transferred to my blog). Amazingly, I recently chose a photograph for the cover of the book versions of my Real-Time Reviews and the most appropriate seemed to be one I had just taken in Copenhagen at the Glyptotek Museum (the connection about which later dawned on me *after* the event of uswing it for the RTR books).

I feel these three Samuels collections - White Hands, Glyphotech and Man of the Machen - are highly significant classics in the Weird Literature canon.

I received my copy of the Chomu Press edition yesterday - it's a lovely little volume. Great design.I'll be reading this one and keeping the Ex Occ edition on the collectables shelf.
