This isn't a joke - I think the Karate Kid remake might be the best film I've seen this year. It did things film is supposed to do - it felt alive, had the most vivid sense of place I've not seen in a film for a long time, it had rounded characters you cared about, moved at just the right pace and was quite breathtakingly beautiful in places. Not a bit of it was overdone or OTT. Silly to think a film called 'Karate Kid' should linger in my imagination like a real experience. I think I wanted to live in it.
(btw the violence was as brutal as any in any adult action film, something my wife was quite uncomfortable with, and very strong for a twelve.)
