After all these months of re-reading 'The Glastonbury Romance' (1933) by John Cowper Powys, I have come now to the final chapter: THE FLOOD. Appropriate for our apocalyptic thoughts today? "One especial thing that struck his pragmatic and literal mind was the extraordinary difference between this murderous-looking flood-water and all other bodies of water he had ever seen or known. The brownish-grey expanse before him was not like the sea; nor was it like a lake. It was a thing different from every other natural phenomenon. As we are all the centre of our own universe the idea of a universally negating apocalypse has never appealed to me, Des. There will always be those who survive and continue. Only those who believe in the apocalypse will be properly subsumed by it - and I'm not only talking on the physical plane. An infinite universe dictates infinite change and also an equally infinite stasis. Happy Christmas! | ||

I must admit I like the theory that this "end of the world" thing actually means the end of this cycle - a new beginning, a new dawn - rather than the whole planet just blowing up in our faces. It would be nice to think it was somehow the dawning of a new age - but I think that's just an old hippy's pipedream! | ||

As I understand it, this is a Western misunderstanding of a non-Western view of things. As you say, Caroline, it's cyclical. There isn't really an end. It'd be like looking at a calendar of 2012 and saying we run out of days on 31st Dec. Monty Python had a calendar that offered a free extra month. Merry Apocalypse! | ||
