So what is everybody doing tonight? I might be going along to Hogswatch with the Sheffield Science Fiction Group after Trick or Treating with my daughter. Wanted to watch The Fearless Vampire Killers but couldn't get it in time.

Ally, regardless of its roots, it's a modern American thing. Trick-or-treating never happened when I was a boy.

I loathe any tradition that gives people the idea that they can knock on my door with impunity.

It's official: Zed is Victor Meldrew.

I remember Halloweening as a boy. One lad on our street ran a little annual business. He used to round up a bunch of cute kids and take a cut of their profits. I bet he's CEO of a power company now.

Tonight I will be writing, and then watching the final installment of the brilliant DEAD SET.

We used to do it when I was a kid, in the seventies, in Germany (can't remember if we did trick-or-treat earlier, in the UK - I just remember I used to wander the streets at night looking for witches and ghosts). It was fun, except for the occasional grumpy door-opener (maybe it was one of Zed's relatives). We don't have it over here (although we did a Halloween party at our school for the international students). We have Ghost Month instead...

I would like to see this Dead Set - I wish I had UK telly sometimes. Instead, I'll probably watch the films I still haven't seen from Six Films to Keep You Awake. I may watch a couple of old favourites as well - maybe The Fog, or Phantasm, or one of the Blind Dead movies.

I'd like to go out actually, but I can't walk today, damnit. Thank heavens I have so many books and DVDs...

Don't expect anything particularly original from DEAD SET, Huw...it's simply 28 DAYS LATER in the Big Brother house. Little Jamie Winstone is brilliant, though.

Lock the door and gaze into the television? You can't complain about society falling apart with that attitude, Zed.

Oh, you're right. Sorry, I missed that bit.

Still, I think the general point is valid. Surely a festival wherein society engages with itself is to be welcomed? If it's used as an excuse by trouble-makers then that means we must be more involved, not less. Take it back from the ne'er-do-wells. Nobody uses Christmas as an excuse to do bad because everyone's on board with it.

(pause)

You hate Christmas, too, don't you?

Yay, for Des!

Rubbish, isn't it?

I'm not religious and I don't like particularly buying stuff for people. It's mildly enjoyable now that I have a kid, but I still find it a chore. Apart from Christmas dinner: Zed's loves the Christmas dinner.

The only thing worse than Christmas is New Year (shudder). All those idiots pretending to enjoy themselves...

I'm going to put a burlap sack over my head, with just holes for the eyes cut out - think Texas Chainsaw Massacre - wear a soiled pair of Dickies maybe, and some kind of huge black shit-stompers on my feet.

Then I'm going to go around the neighborhood at trick-or-treating time. Ring various doorbells. And when the people answer the door, I'm just going to stand there... silent... and still....

(Just to clarify: I don't live in Hollywood. I, again, live in Simi Valley, at the high north-west edge of the San Fernando Valley - Manson Family ranch on one end, Ronald Reagan Library on the other.

The Bob Hope Ranch is mostly built over now, with houses no one will buy... but back in the day, this was a bustling site of many movie and TV productions. The hilly mountains that surround Simi Valley are famous: they've been in hundreds of Hollywood westerns, and thousands of pornos.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program....)

Donnie darko - Where everything ends on Halloween - technically speaking.

I just like that main actor... what's his name? The guy from "L.A. Law"? From DARKMAN - oh, that's a great movie. Not really scary though. He was in the sequel too. He also had a brief, totally wasted scene in... was it JUNO?... can't even remember now....
