Panel discussions: The Allure of Gothic Novels with Danel Olson, Violette Malan, Barbara Roden, and Steven Volk I attended this panel, which was fairly interesting. The highlight, though, was Violette Malan -- having been seemingly appointed Expert by the moderator owing to her PhD in 18th century literature -- explaining her uncertainty about author/title pairings with "My specialty is pastoral poetry." It's too bad you didn't get "Why do we write dark fiction?" Graham Joyce was stellar, as always. | ||

I thought the highlight was Sean McMullen asking why none of us had mentioned Gibson's Neuromancer as an example of new Gothic; he seemed rather affronted we hadn't. As this was right at the end of the panel, we didn't have time to explain that we'd each been asked to single out one recent example of the new Gothic, so we all took the question literally and went with 'one' and 'recent' (for the record, the three novels we picked were Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis, Cold Skin by Albert Sanchez Pinol, and The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafon). For the record, we spoke about the Gothic for an hour and didn't mention Poe once, either, so I can't feel too bad about omitting to mention William Gibson. | ||

So many panels turn into "the audience pretends they were panelists" at the end, I was actually kind of glad there was little time for discussion at the end of this one. It's a pet peeve of mine. | ||

It's always a bit nerve-inducing when you ask for questions; if no hands go up then the panelists look warily at each other as they realise it's going to be a very long 20 minutes until the panel's over, but if a lot of hands go up you wonder 'Uh oh, what're they going to hit us with?' The sidekicks panel I moderated had some good questions at the end, from people who were obviously interested in the subject; on the other hand, the psychic detectives panel I did last year in Saratoga attracted some really strange questions, so much so that I wondered if some of the people asking had actually listened to the preceding panel comments. |
