I think so. Let's just hope the sodding mortgage lenders pass on the savings to their customers, and we can get the property market moving again so I feel safe in my job again.

Fucking hell. Didn't expect that.

It's a good move for folk who have variable mortgages, I guess. Provided you don't bank with Bastard and Fuckyou.

And new mortgage deals...hopefully. Which is the crux of the current problem: the lenders won't lend.

Um, unless I'm reading this wrong, Zed, it doesn't look like any benefit derived therein, will be passed on to the lenders/borrowers.

Here's a term, that all sides of the political spectrum here in the States - left and right - have used, especially in this campaign season, that put chills up my spine every time I heard it. It was these two little words:

"come back"

Everyone kept saying they're going to ensure the housing market would "come back," that home values would "come back," that that great frothy economy that was a result would "come back," etc. I defy anyone to find the defintion in any one's entoning of that term, any time it's been used.

On the one hand, everyone agrees that the whole thing was a corruption to the very core, that allowed the market to spiral upwards to dizzying heights, got borrowers who didn't deserve it to get into homes they couldn't afford, who nearly destroyed the international credit markets with bundled toxic loans, etc. It was horrible, terrible, awful, stinky.

But then they all intone that chant, that the market will "come back" to the good old days when everything was a result of that evil and corrupt system.

... it just doesn't add up... and it scares me....

Some banks pass it on. Mine does.

I heard yesterday that this interest rate in the UK is still high compared to the rest of the world. Japan's is a third of one percent, apparently!

Craig, you're right: it's simply unsustainable.

I just want people to be able to get mortgages so that houses will start sellign again and I can to to the area I want to be in.

I predicted this current crash 5 years ago, which is why we live in a slightly shitty area and have a low mortgage. Now I simply need houses to start selling again so that we can move.

The housing market was completely unsustainable...but almost everyone just bought into the dream and got deeper into debt.

You're probably a very trustworthy, upstanding client, who doesn't tell your bankers you write horror. Those with a close personal relationship with their "small town" bankers, etc... those are going to be the ones with all the cards in this new future. You can still get home loans, here, if you have enough equity, credit, years-in, and the right relationship.

But those big banks, those in power, right or left, here or there... they're all pulling up the huge drawbridge together, every one... waiting out the plague is their real plan.... To paraphrase Frank Zappa, they're only looking out for number one, and number one ain't you - you ain't even number two....

Zed, not to hone in on you, but "houses to start selling again" is itself as open-ended and ambiguous as "come back." "Again" referring back to what, exactly...?

If you have a low mortgage, bought it 5 years back (just before the insane boom-bust), then you should be okay, if you simply - batten down the hatches, and ride this thing out.

Wow, now I'm being all tropey.... See what this thing does?

Then what the hell are you doing here trying exact sympathy from me?!?

In fact, in movies, we regularly cast people like you as the villains! The evil land developers! You want to destroy a beautiful glade or grandma's farm for more chav housing tracts!

Time for the real tenants of the land to rise up, and, shall we say, "repossess".... BWAAAH! HA! HA! HA! HA!.....

Sympathy? Eh? Are you mad? Oh, of course you are.

No, I'm just stating the purely selfish reasons why I want the housing market to start moving again.

Btw, I design and draw buildings, not develop them.

Pennies? what do they look like?

I've forgotten.

Anyone know how to make £13.67 available credit on a credit card feed, clothe and transport you from 7th till the 28th of the month?

Fucking MOT. Fucking shity wankers I work for moving my job to Reading and making me redundant. (Known about it for months but they finally handed over the envelope with my notice in today - still felt like being kicked in the gut even though I thought I was prepared for it. I will officially no longer work here from 18/12 - lovely Christmas present).

I bought my house about 6 years ago before things went mental but unless my jobhunting goes a lot better in the next few weeks I'm in deep shit at the start of the year.

I was made redundant in 1997. I have worked since then - assembly line work, food packaging and less savoury dreamjobs, just to stay afloat - but three years ago they told me I could go back to studying if I wanted to, and here I am in my third year of Social Work. Will I ever get a proper job as a social worker? They say yes, since a lot of people in that line will go on pension in three-five years' time. I could even go for a Master in psychology or sociology once I have my diploma. Keep a cool head, Weber, and you'll be ok.

Interest rate cut & Barack Obama has given a much needed lift to the gloom that seems to have set in recently...

Mind you, I don't think you can buy your way out of a recession...The downturn can't be shored up unnaturally I don't think.

Some things just have to be endured.
